The Global Esports Federation (GEF) has announced it has joined the Sports for Climate Action initiative by United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
By signing UNFCCC’s Framework Agreement, the GEF commits to ensuring that the esports sector is ‘on the path to a low-carbon future’.

The five core principles of the Framework Agreement include promoting greater environmental responsibility, reducing the overall climate impact from esports and sports, promoting sustainable and responsible consumption, educating on climate action, and advocating for climate action through communications.
Paul J. Foster, CEO of Global Esports Federation, spoke on the announcement: “Esports and gaming are powerful platforms for connection, for creating awareness and to generate impact in combating climate change, across all parts of the diverse ecosystem.
“Joining the Sports for Climate Action marks a great leap forward for the world’s esports community in the fight against climate change. We reaffirm our commitment to contribute to sustainable communities worldwide and call upon our members to help and drive the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals with real action.”

The Sports for Climate Action initiative calls on sports and esports organisations to acknowledge the industry’s contribution to climate change, as well as taking responsibility towards climate neutrality for a safer planet.
UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Patricia Espinosa, added: “Sports organisations and athletes are in a unique position in the race against climate change ‘because sports touches on every cross-section of society’.”

Esports Insider says: This is a significant step for the industry, as we all need to make sure we are doing the maximum for reducing our impact on climate change. It’ll be interesting to see what new actions the GEF takes following the signing of UNFCCC’s Framework Agreement.
