Mastercard is also set to launch a virtual card specifically for gaming.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div id=\"esi-paragraph-67d67d0a16e13\" class=\"esi-paragraph \">\n    \n<p>As part of the MoU, a digital asset enablement project will be launched in the country, which sees Mastercard develop another AR activation, along with its very own metaverse.<\/p>\n\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div id=\"esi-paragraph-67d67d0a17886\" class=\"esi-paragraph \">\n    \n<p><strong>Dimitrios Dosis, President (EEMEA) at Mastercard, <\/strong>commented: \u201cWe are delighted to partner with the Saudi Esports Federation (SEF). More recently, the financial company became the <a href=\"https:\/\/esportsinsider.com\/2022\/01\/flyquests-mastercard-financial-partner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">official financial services partner for FlyQuest\u2019s LoL teams<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div id=\"esi-paragraph-67d67d0a1a694\" class=\"esi-paragraph \">\n    \n<p>The Saudi government has been continuously scaling up its investment in esports and gaming, with government-backed <a href=\"https:\/\/esportsinsider.com\/2022\/01\/esl-faceit-group-bought-saudi-1-5bn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Savvy Gaming Group buying both ESL Gaming and FACEIT<\/a>. Moreover, the Saudi Arabian government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/esportsinsider.com\/2022\/05\/saudi-arabia-public-investment-fund-esports-nintendo-stake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Public Investment Fund (PIF) recently bought a 5% stake in Nintendo<\/a> as well as stakes in other gaming companies.<\/p>\n\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div id=\"esi-paragraph-67d67d0a1b0f5\" class=\"esi-paragraph \">\n    \n<p>Saudi Arabia&#8217;s involvement in esports is seen as controversial by some in the industry due to the country&#8217;s human rights record and political environment. Some industry commentators\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2022\/mar\/21\/saudi-arabia-expands-its-sportswashing-ambitions-to-the-world-of-gaming\">allege the country\u2019s recent esports push amounts to \u2018esportswashing\u2019<\/a>, an attempt to deflect from the country\u2019s human rights record.<\/p>\n\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div id=\"esi-paragraph-67d67d0a1bc68\" class=\"esi-paragraph \">\n    \n<p>Both <a href=\"https:\/\/esportsinsider.com\/2020\/08\/blast-neom-terminated\/\">BLAST<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/esportsinsider.com\/riot-ethics-neom-backlash\/\">Riot Games faced backlash from fans<\/a> when they announced partnerships with NEOM, a controversial $500m (~\u00a3397m) Saudi government-backed development.<\/p>\n\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image credit: Mastercard Financial company Mastercard has announced a partnership with the Saudi Esports Federation (SEF).
