Age of Empires esports event Red Bull Wololo has announced its return, with the competition taking place this October in Cordoba, Spain.

Red Bull Wololo: El Reinado will be played in a real-world castle, the Castillo de Almodóvar del Río, fitting with Age of Empires’ medieval theme. Four games will be played; three from the Age of Empires franchise and one from the Age of Mythology franchise.

Now in its seventh edition, Red Bull Wololo is an Age of Empires tournament series that has been organised by energy drink company Red Bull since 2020. Last year, however, the event took a hiatus. The tournament is an interesting twist on the usual esports event formula, mostly because the organisers decided to host some of the previous editions in another castle, the Heidelberg Castle in Germany.

Keeping up with the medieval theme, the tournament’s final matches will take place in a Spanish castle this year. The Castillo de Almodóvar del Río was originally built in the eighth century.

Red Bull has announced that AGON by AOC will return as the Official Monitor Partner for the event, and Backforce Chairs will provide competitors with their products.

The event’s prize pool is $60,000 (~£47,900) and the competition in the castle will last for four days. Red Bull announced that the main stage for the event will be located in the castle’s courtyard.

The tournament itself will feature four separate games. Age of Empires 1 will have two finalists compete after the regional qualifiers in Vietnam. Age of Empires 4 will have a longer series of qualifiers through the Elite Gaming Channel TV platform and Age of Mythology: Retold will have a total of four competitors. The main game of the tournament, Age of Empires 2, will have qualifiers in-game and several competitors will be invited to the tournament.

Red Bull Wololo is the most-watched tournament series in Age of Empires esports, with the 2022 edition attracting almost 120,000 peak viewers for the Age of Empires 1 tournament. Age of Empires 1 is a game that was originally released in 1997.
