Brazil has taken another significant step in the regulation of one of the biggest esports scenes in the world, by opening a public consultation on the subject.

Interested parties have until March 5 to provide their input on the rapidly developing esports landscape in the country.

Giovanni Rocco, the national secretary of Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sports, is leading the initiative. Its target is to create a modern framework of regulation, with industry best practices built in.

Rocco said: “With the responses obtained, the Ministry will be able to evaluate adjustments to the current ordinance, with the aim of aligning it with society’s expectations.”

Regulation Key to Growth of Huge Market

Brazil is already home to one of the biggest esports markets in the world. It was estimated in 2023 that there were 25 million users in the country, with that figure expected to exceed 33 million by 2028.

One recent sign of the immense popularity and ever-growing profile of esports was the unveiling of soccer legend Neymar Jr as the President of FURIA’s Kings League Brazil team.

Brazil is believed to be the fifth largest esports market in the world, already boasting a significant economic and social impact. So it’s no surprise that the Government is acting to ensure transparency and public involvement in this burgeoning sector.

Impact of Legalization of Sports Betting

The gambling and gaming landscape of Brazil is evolving swiftly, following the legalization of sports betting in the country in late 2023.

Authorized sports wagering began at the start of 2025 in a nation that is expected to quickly become one of the biggest legal betting markets in the world

Given the huge appetite among younger generations for the thrilling digital competition provided by esports, there will inevitably also be huge interest among its audience in online betting.

Wagering on esports at licensed sportsbooks is certain to make up a sizable proportion of the online sports betting scene in Brazil.

In this context, it will be fascinating to learn the outcome of the public consultation on the regulation of esports.

Industry professionals, esports fans and interested members of the public can access the consultation form through the Participa + Brasil platform.
