Iconic Pokemon VGC (Video Game Championships) player Wolfe Glick has claimed yet another trophy, winning the Pokemon Europe International Championships.
EUIC was the largest Pokemon VGC tournament in history, boasting 1,257 competitors from all over the world. However, it was Glick and his surprising team that still came out on top.
Speaking about the event in a post-match interview, Glick said: “Honestly, I’m just thinking about the scope. There were 1,400 players who entered this tournament, the official biggest Pokemon tournament of all time.
“1,400 players trained their Pokemon, travelled to London, practised with a friend, worked on their team… 1,400 people showed up to this tournament hoping and dreaming to win this entire thing… But it wasn’t enough!”
Wolfe Glick Isn’t Afraid Of Testing the Meta
With over 15 years spent dominating the VGC scene, Glick is willing to take some risks with his team that others may shy away from.
Going into EUIC, Glick was the only notable player with a Gothitelle on his team. The run wasn’t perfect, but it was clearly enough to get the fan-favourite player into the Grand Final against UK native Dyl Yeoman. The battle ended up closer than expected, with Glick losing the first game to Yeoman. But the second and third games went to Glick, making him the very best that ever was once again.
Glick’s team consisted of Koraidon, Flutter Mane, Incineroar, Amoonguss, Scream Tail and Gothitelle.
This interesting team allowed Glick to crush opponents with his Perish Trap strategy — trapping enemy Pokemon with Scream Tail’s Perish Song and Gothitelle’s Shadow Tag. But neither Pokemon were used in the Grand Final.
Instead, Wolf focused on Koraidon, Incineroar, Amoonguss and Flutter Mane, showing his versatility and ability to switch up strategies. Glick’s Incineroar was the star of the final set, causing massive discourse debating his decisions on stage. Gamers are now waiting for Pokemon to announce Wolfe’s Incineroar mystery gift distribution.
During Glick’s post-win interview, the top competitor revealed that it was he who won the online Global Challenge, which had 10,000 competitors.
While most definitely a surprising revelation, it’s not altogether shocking coming from the player who won 10 regionals, three international championships (counting EUIC) and one world championship over the past 15 years.
