British Esports has announced that its dedicated gaming and esports arena in Sunderland is set to open in 2026.

The green light on the project spearheaded by the national esports body was given after financing for the facility was approved.

The 15,000-square-foot arena will be custom-built to host a range of live events, including esports tournaments and ‘immersive audience experiences’. The facility will include a 200-seat theatre along with content and editing studios.

According to British Esports, the arena is the first of its kind to be built in Europe and will act as a training and education hub for players looking to practice in similar conditions experienced when competing on-stage at a live esports event.

“This is our St George’s Park for esports, a national home with world-class performance spaces that will help train the next generation of esports talent and help grow the region to be a key leader in esports in the UK,” said Andy Payne OBE, Chair of British Esports.

“This significant development marks another crucial step forward in British Esports’ mission to champion grassroots esports development and elite athlete performance across the nation and globally.”

Work on the venue, located next to the National Esports Performance Campus in Sunderland, is scheduled to begin in September, with the facility due to open in Q1 of 2026.

Esports Growth In The UK

The UK esports industry is becoming a hotbed of growth, with several initiatives operating across the country. In addition to the unveiling of the British Esports facility, the University of Suffolk will open its own state-of-the-art facility in Ipswich, which will be used by students studying for a degree in esports.

Outside of education, players from the UK are achieving success on some of the biggest esports stages in the world.

Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) player William ‘Mezii’ Merriman became the first UK player to win a Major, after Team Vitality achieved victory at the BLAST.tv Austin Major.
