Popular mobile MOBA game Arena of Valor is set to have its own World Cup in Los Angeles, according to Esports Observer. Yet to be officially announced, unspecified sources are claiming that the tournament will have a prize pool of at least $500,00 (£354,035) and is expected to be staged in July this year.

The sources revealed that this World Cup is part of a global esports launch by Tencent Games, which will also include competitions for both local and collegiate competitors. Only launching in December 2017, Arena of Valor’s predecessor Honor of Kings is the most-played mobile game in the world – it’s said to have at least 200 million registered players.

Perhaps easiest to compare to League of Legends, it’s understandable as to why the game has seen astronomical success before any global-scale competitions have taken place. This comparison is even more tangible when it’s noted that Tencent Holdings acquired Riot Games – who is behind League of Legends – back in 2015.

Prominent esports organisations such as SK Gaming, Team Liquid, Vitality, and Alliance are all rumoured to be taking place in the World Cup. SK Gaming and Team Liquid have already competed in Arena of Valor when they played in the Asia International Championship in November – which also had a $500,000 (£354,035) prize pool.

Esports Insider says: It only makes sense that the most popular mobile game in the world is looking to fully embrace the ever-growing esports scene. We’re hoping to see more top tier esports organisations enter the Arena of Valor scene ahead of the tournament.
