FC Schalke 04 Esports has found a new sponsor in the form of German smartphone brand Honor.

The news was announced in a joint press conference at Gamescom in Cologne, with a two-year deal being signed by both parties.

Tim Reichert, Chief Gaming Officer of FC Schalke 04 Esports has this to say about the partnership: “We are pleased to introduce Honor as official partner of FC Schalke 04 Esports. Honor is a young brand that stands for technological innovation. Like no other company, they are in contact with their supporters – a bond with the fans, as we live on Schalke.”

Honor revealed its very own gaming-dedicated phone in June: the Honor Play. The smartphone brand entered esports last year when it became a sponsor of SK Gaming and is owned by Chinese group Huawei.

Franko Fischer, Head of Marketing Communications at Honor Germany added: “We look forward to setting new standards in mobile gaming with FC Schalke 04 as an established, innovative esports team.”

FC Schalke 04 is represented in League of Legends (competing in the EU LCS), FIFA, and PES. The football club’s gaming division’s other partners include AOK NorthWest, CORSAIR, effect, KONAMI, and Deutsche Glasfaser.

Esports Insider says: It’s a tad strange that the organisation is now sponsored by a smartphone brand as it doesn’t compete in any mobile titles – at the moment, at least. The statement from Fischer does suggest that this expansion is likely however, as the parties plan to set “new standards in mobile gaming.”
