German football club Werder Bremen has announced an esports partnership with European energy and telecommunications company EWE AG.

The company has been a long-standing sponsor of the football club itself, and has now become a jersey sponsor of its esports division.

Klaus Filbry, CEO of SV Werder Bremen commented in a statement: “It’s great that we are now working together with EWE on esports. The product world of EWE fits in perfectly with the topic, especially high-performance Internet offers and a secure power supply are a basic requirement for every gamer.”

Werder Bremen entered the esports industry in July when it recruited two professional FIFA players, through a partnership with STARK eSports Agency. The agency helped the club with its approach towards the industry and continues to do so throughout its venture.

Carsten Niederberger, Project Manager at EWE AG also discussed the partnership: “We look forward to working with Werder Bremen on esports and the new impulses it brings in a relationship that has grown over many years. We are sure that we can profit from the know-how of Werder in the area of esports and open up a new target group for us. All in all, it is an ideal introduction to the very exciting topic of esports for us.”

Esports Insider says: Werder Bremen hasn’t been in esports for long at all and it’s already brought in a non-endemic sponsor – it may not be too surprising considering their pre-existing working relationship, but props where it’s deserved nonetheless.
