ONE Esports and Toyota join forces to host second sim racing tournament

ONE Esports, the esports venture of sports media company ONE Championship, has unveiled a partnership with the Asia Pacific branch of Japanese automotive marque Toyota.

As a result, the two parties will once again join forces to host the Toyota GAZOO Racing GT Cup sim racing event.

This is the second time that ONE Esports and Toyota have collaborated, having operated and hosted the inaugural GT Cup which took place in 2020. According to the release, the inaugural event generated approximately 2m in total views.

Carlos Alimurung, CEO of ONE Esports, spoke on the deal: “I’m thrilled to announce that we have joined forces with Toyota Motor Asia Pacific for the second year running to bring the TGR GT Cup ASIA 2021 to a global audience.

“This event bridges the gap between real-world racing and esports and is an excellent opportunity for us to reach passionate motorsports and sim racing fans around the world, as well as capitalise on the sector’s rapid rise in popularity. With sim racing primed for continued growth, ONE Esports is honoured to host the highly anticipated event yet again.”

Aspiring sim racers from across the region will be able to participate in the event on Gran Turismo Sport, beginning with national competitions that will commence in August and will run until September. The top 21 drivers will qualify for the Regional Finals set to take place in October. Details surrounding the event’s prize pool are to be revealed at a later date.

Esports Insider says: Considering the success of the 2020 GT Cup, it’s not surprising to see ONE Esports enter yet another deal with Toyota for the 2021 event. The partnership also highlights the continued development of sim-racing worldwide.
