Malaysian esports organisation Geek Fam has rebranded to Geek Slate following a major partnership with Web3 media startup Avium.
Avium was co-founded by Ivan Yeo, the former CEO of EVOS Esports, in 2022 and had previously launched its own esports vertical called Slate Esports. Last year, the company secured a $2m (~£1.68m) pre-seed round led by Saison Capital.
Slate Esports currently competes in MPL Singapore, the country’s regional Mobile Legends: Bang Bang league.
According to a release, the partnership will initially focus on Geek Fam’s efforts in Dota 2, with a new team competing in the upcoming DPC SEA Division 1. However, the partnership will not just be limited to the MOBA title.
In particular, Avium highlighted Geek Fam’s PUBG Mobile Pro League Malaysia team as well as its MPL Indonesia franchise as future merger possibilities. Alongside those two rosters Geek Fam also has Mobile Legends teams in Malaysia and the Philippines.
Ivan Yeo is a well known name within the Southeast Asian esports industry, largely due to his position as Co-founder and former CEO of EVOS Esports, one of the largest esports organisations in the region. Last year, the organisation actually expanded into traditional sports after announcing its own basketball team, EVOS Thunder Bogor.
Lim Keat Kuang, the Co-Founder of Geek Fam, commented on the partnership: “I’ve known Ivan since the early days of Asia’s esports scene, and we are both pioneers in this space.
“When the opportunity was there to work together, I jumped on it. His [track] record speaks for itself and I can’t wait to see the growth of Geek Slate into an international brand.”
The upcoming DPC SEA Division 1 is set to take place later this month and will feature a $200,000 (~£168,800) prize pool. The competition’s operator Epulze recently announced a data partnership with Oddin to gather data directly from the tournament servers.
