Super Smash Bros. Ultimate prodigy Edgar ‘Sparg0’ Valdez shocked the FGC when he revealed the character he’s been playing a lot after an underwhelming end at Kagaribi #13.

Kagaribi #13 was the most prestigious Ultimate tourneys of the year so far, bringing past Major winners from all over the world to Japan to compete at the highest level. Sparg0 repped Mexico at the epic event, but he was bested by fellow Mexican pro Leonarodo ‘MkLeo’ Lopez for a disappointing 33-48th place finish.

While Sparg0 tweeted that the event was ‘an amazing experience,’ he admitted he was feeling ‘down’ about Smash recently — but Piranha Plant was lifting his spirits.

Sparg0 Discusses Piranha Plant in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Sparg0 has most recently been known for his top-tier Cloud play, getting him a handful of first place finishes at Majors throughout 2024. This includes Collision 2024 and Supernova 2024 to name just a few.

Despite his strong showing last year, Sparg0 stated to his fans on May 12th, that he’s not been feeling too excited about Smash recently. However, he started picking up a surprise new character, Piranha Plant, and this has been the ‘most fun’ he’s had in Smash in a long while.

He said: “Like I now have an actual grab, a fast fair, a better jab… I never have to worry about getting gimped, and overall the gameplan is way more fun than with Cloud, where I just play the rock paper scissors of playing around getting parried or not, getting gimped or not, getting punished for doing up b oos, etc.

“I feel like I can play the game more with Plant than with Cloud, such a weird feeling.”

The Smash community reacted with shock and excitement at the tweet. Right now, Piranha Plant is considered a D-tier fighter, which means he’s one of the worst in the game. This is due to his slow speed, difficulty approaching and bad frame data. However, Plant can be dangerous in the right hands thanks to his poison ability — and Sparg0 would be one of those hands.

Sparg0 has been dominant in Ultimate for years now despite being just 19 years old. MkLeo and Sparg0 have become some of the toughest challengers in Majors, both known for making surprising characters mainstream by consistently reaching the Top 8 with them. Seeing Piranha Plant in the Top 8 would be refreshing in a sea of Steves and Sonics.
