Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) has officially announced that it is offering two esports concentrations this fall, which are specialised fields of study within a major chosen by students.
The two undergraduate concentrations are ‘Esports and Gaming Content Creation‘ in the College of Media and Entertainment and ‘Esports Coaching‘ by Leisure and Sport Management in the College of Behavioural and Health Sciences.
The Esports and Gaming Content Creation concentration aims to teach students about aesthetics, ethics, marketing and technology surrounding gaming-related content and streams. On the other hand, Esports Coaching focuses on the skills needed to be an esports coach at high school, collegiate or professional levels.
“Students will have the opportunity to learn about the variety of skills needed in the esports industry and learn specialised skills in areas in which they want to focus,” said Richard Lewis, Esports and Content Creation Coordinator Associate Professor. “There are hands-on experience opportunities working with the MTSU Esports club and a number of community organisations while earning their degree.”
Lewis went on to say that students will also be able to choose from minors to develop skills within their professional interests.
In addition to the concentrations, students will also be able to use the university’s esports facilities. The Level Up Arena, which opened last fall on the second floor of the Student Union Building, serves as a learning lab for esports concentrations. In addition, there is also the Gaming Lab in BAS S137F, which is equipped with both PC’s and Nintendo Switch consoles.
In 2025, Universities have been investing more into the esports space as it becomes a more viable career path for students. Back in April, the University of North Florida was granted $3m by the city council to develop an esports arena. Earlier this year, the University of Suffolk in Ipswich, England, shared plans to build a $2.17m esports facility.
