Rebels Gaming, the esports organisation owned by Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, will compete in the next season of Spain’s top-flight regional League of Legends league LVP Superliga.
Rebels Gaming’s proposal was the highest-valued in the selection process, according to a release. The organisation will thus fill a vacancy left by the departure of G2 Arctic from the competition this September.
Rebels Gaming will join other LVP teams Giants Gaming, Movistar Riders, UCAM Tokiers, Barça eSports, Fnatic TQ, Heretics, Finetwork KOI, BISONS ECLUB, and Guasones.
Spanish footballer David de Gea launched Rebels gaming in December 2021. The organisation fields teams in VALORANT, League of Legends and fighting games — in contrast to other footballer-owned organisations which tend to aim for FIFA and other football games.
In October 2022, former Manchester United player Juan Mata and current de Gea teammate Bruno Fernandes joined the company as shareholders, marking the pair’s first foray into esports. Rebels Gaming also opened a new headquarters in Madrid in 2022, and secured a partnership with Razer.
Rebels Gaming has had a successful year in both League of Legends and VALORANT. The organisation currently competes in the top-flight VALORANT league in Spain. Rebels Gaming was knocked out in the playoffs of this competition this year.
David De Gea, Manchester United goalkeeper and President of Rebels Gaming, said: “We are delighted that Rebels Gaming is joining the League of Legends Superliga. It is an important step for the club’s strategy. We were already in the biggest VALORANT regional league and being part of the League of Legends one was a natural step for the club.”
