Game developer Capcom has unveiled that the 10th season of the Capcom Pro Tour (CPT) will feature a prize pool of over $2m (~£1.65m).
The prize pool will be distributed over the course of events taking place throughout the season, however, Capcom announced that players who qualify for Capcom Cup X will compete for a grand prize of $1m (£~826,620).
The increase in prize money makes it the largest cash prize for a Capcom Cup winner in the history of the tournament.
Capcom also revealed initial details surrounding the 2023 CPT. The developer aims to begin the circuit in the summer with a mixture of offline and online competitions alongside its World Warrior programme.
The World Warrior programme is a regional competition that provides 26 additional slots to the Capcom Cup. Each region includes five events that culminate in a regional final where the eight qualifiers qualify for the season-ending tournament.
The increase in Capcom Cup prize money is a significant increase in comparison to last season’s offering. Capcom Cup IX featured a prize pool of $298,500 (£~246,593) split among all participants, with the winner taking home $120,000 (£~99,133).
Alongside the near-520% increase in prize money, Capcom revealed the CPT will be played on Street Fighter 6, marking the game’s competitive debut. The title will launch on June 2nd, with the CPT expected to start soon after.
Since announcing plans to promote esports with ‘full force’ in 2018, Capcom has continued to improve its offering. In February 2022, it secured a partnership with restaurant chain Arby’s to sponsor the 2021 CPT Season Final.
