The PUBG Mobile Star Challenge, a global tournament hosted by Tencent Games and PUBG Corporation for streamers and popular personalities, has been announced.
The PUBG Mobile tournament will cover Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Japan/Korea, and China. It will boast a $600,000 (£457,374) prize pool, with the finals of the event taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates at the end of 2018.
The title sponsor for the PUBG Mobile Star Challenge is the Samsung Galaxy Note9, which will aid in bringing “celebrities, professional gamers, and internet personalities” for the tournament.
Teams of four will participate, with at least one member being required to have at least 1,000 followers on Twitch, YouTube Gaming, Facebook Live, Smashcast TV, Mixer, Cube TV, Nimo TV, or another notable streaming platform.
The format of the tournament will include qualifying events which lead into preliminaries. From there, there will be regional tournaments which decide which teams will advance to the finals. The winning team of regional finals will receive $20,000 (£15,245.80), whereas the winners of the global final will cash in $200,000 (£152,458).
Not only will the victors take home a healthy amount of money, but they will receive a contract to become an official PUBG Mobile streamer to “gain global exposure”. Registration for the tournament has been and gone, with over 15,000 teams applying to see which will be the last one standing.
Esports Insider says: Closing off the tournament to somewhat prominent personalities in the PUBG Mobile community feels like a very Fortnite thing to do. Nonetheless, it’s good to see PUBG Corporation get involved with running its own event once more after the success of the PUBG Global Invitational. The prize of becoming an official content creator is an interesting twist and will likely act as solid motivation beyond monetary gain.
