TL;DR

  • Black Ops 7 is the next Call of Duty game.
  • Black Ops 7 is planned for release at some point in 2025.
  • Recent info drops have confirmed that Black Ops 7 is a continuation of the Black Ops 2 storyline, and that it’s set in 2035.
  • New multiplayer modes and maps in Black Ops 7 could help breathe fresh air into Call of Duty’s PvP experience.
  • A return to fan-favourite zombie maps from the Black Ops series would likely be popular due to the heavy nostalgia held by many in the Black Ops fan base.

Black Ops 7 is set for release in 2025, so its launch is only a few months away. There are dozens of features, mechanics, and modes that we’d like to see in the seventh iteration of Black Ops, especially if it has a connection to BO2.

Below, we’ve compiled 10 things we want to see in Black Ops 7’s multiplayer, zombies, and campaign. Whether you’re a zombies fan awaiting a new mechanic or you simply want to see a few classic maps return to multiplayer, it’s time to get excited, as Black Ops 7 could be a huge step in the right direction for the Call of Duty franchise.

What is Black Ops 7?

Black Ops 7 is an upcoming Call of Duty game that builds upon the stories of Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 6. Set in 2035, the next step for Black Ops will seemingly have futuristic undertones. David Mason returns in Black Ops 7, so the campaign could be one of the best in Call of Duty history.

Alongside the campaign, multiplayer and zombie modes are likely on the way. Many key details about Black Ops 7 haven’t been officially revealed yet, but more info is planned for release sometime during the summer of 2025.

10 things we want to see in Black Ops 7

Below, you’ll find our picks for the top 10 features and improvements we’d like to see in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

A spiritual successor to Tranzit

Black Ops 2’s Tranzit was one of Call of Duty’s most popular zombie maps ever. It featured a much larger area to explore, which you could navigate by riding a bus. Tranzit was revolutionary for its time, but it still hasn’t received a direct sequel. Hopefully, Black Ops 7 will remaster Tranzit, or at least offer something similar for fans of Black Ops 2.

A new secondary mode

Along with new or returning zombie maps, there’s also the potential to add an entirely new experience, similar to Call of Duty: Ghost’s Extinction mode. Activision could add a new battle royale or even a mode where you battle robots, but unfortunately, it’s unlikely that Black Ops 7 will stray too far from the traditional COD formula.

Further elaboration on omni-movement

Omni-movement is a great way to quickly manoeuvre around the battlefield, regardless of where you’re looking. However, some players hope that Black Ops 7 adds further to this mechanic, though hopefully any changes wouldn’t take the next Call of Duty too far into the futuristic combat style.

A wider collection of weaponry

The list of guns and melee weapons available in Black Ops 6 is expansive, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t new weapons to introduce. New throwable grenades or heavy weapons would be perfect candidates for Black Ops 7, especially since Treyarch can be more creative due to the futuristic theme.

Larger maps

Call of Duty has had multiple titles that feature big maps, and we’d like to see more expansive environments going forward. A mix of small and large locales would be the best option, though they shouldn’t be as big as Battlefield’s maps. New game modes might accompany big maps, possibly pinning larger teams against each other, similar to Black Ops 6’s 10v10 Mosh Pit, but with even bigger locations to explore.

New multiplayer modes

New playlists for multiplayer will be essential if Black Ops 7 aims to offer an experience that’s different from Black Ops 6. We could see a return of fan-favourites like Prop Hunt, though it’d also be great to see some completely new modes. Since Black Ops 7 is set in the future, perhaps a secondary mode for futuristic movement could be established using the Team Deathmatch format.

Map remasters

Map remasters have become commonplace in the Black Ops franchise, so we’d be surprised if Treyarch hasn’t rebuilt many fan-favourites for BO7. We’ll likely receive a new iteration of the popular Nuketown map, though reimaginings of Raid or Mirage would also be fun options.

A return of classic Black Ops characters

We already have confirmation of David Mason’s exciting return, but we could also see Frank Woods or other notable characters from the Black Ops series return. Characters from Black Ops 2 are a priority in our opinion, as Black Ops 7 will be a spiritual successor of sorts.

Free events

Black Ops 6 has locked many of the festivities for its events behind paywalls. We’d like to see events in Black Ops 7 that offer all of the new content for free, especially since Call of Duty typically isn’t a free-to-play franchise for its mainline titles. As crossovers become more prominent in COD, free events will be important; otherwise, most players won’t be able to participate.

A replayable campaign

One of the biggest ways that Activision can improve on the Call of Duty formula is by adding replayability to its campaigns. Though they shouldn’t lean too into RPG mechanics in our opinion, adding secondary challenges, pathways, or characters to play as may add longevity and value to Black Ops 7.

Conclusion

Call of Duty has been stagnant in many ways for the last decade, but a new title is always a chance to revitalise the franchise. Sticking to COD’s boots-on-the-ground roots may be necessary for BO7 to take off, but improvements to omni-movement could also offer new avenues for traditional movement.

Black Ops 7 is a new chapter in the Call of Duty story, but its long-term effect on the franchise has yet to be determined.
