TL;DR

  • The best CS2 matches are based on their popularity, how closely contested they were, and the narrative surrounding the matches.
  • Team Vitality has been dominant in 2025 and thus appears in a few of the best Counter-Strike matches.
  • The Budapest and Austin Majors have broken viewership records thanks to their eBay matches.
  • IEM Melbourne’s Grand Final between Team Vitality and Team Falcon was an instant classic.

Counter-Strike 2 remains one of the biggest names in esports and has a claim to the crown of the most competitive FPS scene. While its normal lobbies are filled with overexcited players screaming to ‘rush B’, the best CS2 matches show off extreme precision, coordination, and reflexes.

The 2025 calendar has been a great showing for CS2 esports, from its majors to its Tier 1 events. Valve clearly knows what it’s doing after tournaments in 2025 broke records, like the Austin Major becoming the most-watched Counter-Strike event of all time, and the level of play only seems to be getting better year on year.

With that said, let’s look back at 2025 and select the best Counter-Strike 2 matches throughout the season.

Ranking criteria

While deciding the best CS2 matches is subjective, we will be looking at a few factors to help determine our best matches of 2025:

  • The peak viewership of the match (stats from escharts)
  • How closely contested the matches were
  • The narratives around the matches.

5. Esports World Cup SF: The MongolZ 2 – 1 Team Vitality

With the Esports World Cup being a Tier 1 event, the final might have been the one on everyone’s radar, but it ended up being a relatively one-sided affair. Instead, one of the best matches of the tournament was the upper bracket semi-final tie between The MongolZ and Team Vitality, a match-up that has shown the best of the CS2 events in 2025.

Spreading across Mirage, Dust II, and Nuke, it was a back-and-forth match where The MongolZ went up early, only for Team Vitality to even up the tie. After the intense battle, The MongolZ took the final game 13 – 7, and would then go on to cruise past Aurora Gaming to claim the trophy.

It seemed that Team Vitality was spent after the semi-final, having begun well in its third-place match but ultimately falling to Team Falcons.

4. StarLadder Budapest Major Grand Final: Team Vitality 3 – 1 FaZe Clan

There were two contrasting narratives around the StarLadder Budapest Major finals. Would FaZe Clan pull off an upset after a marathon match with NaVi and finally win a trophy after a two-year drought, or would the continued dominance of Team Vitality prove too much? Unfortunately for FaZe, Vitality proved why they have been the most successful side in CS2 this year.

While FaZe started well by taking the first game on Nuke, the next three would go to Team Vitality, with them showing off why they won the Game Award for the best esports team of 2025. FaZe Clan fought hard to try to get to a decider, especially on Inferno, losing that round 13 – 9, but ultimately, Team Vitality was too strong for them, just like it was for many others through the season.

3. StarLadder Budapest Major SF: FaZe Clan 2 – 1 Natus Vincere

In one of the matches of the season, Natus Vincere faced off against the FaZe Clan at the final Major of the year in Budapest. While NaVi took the lead on Ancient, Faze took a tight 13 – 11 second map on Nuke, before securing the match on Inferno, taking them to the Grand Finals, although the scores only tell half the story.

NaVi vs FaZe in the Budapest StarLadder SF was an instant classic, and one of the best Bo3 matches the Counter-Strike 2 season had on offer. It showed FaZe’s tenacity to come back after being a round down at the start, and with how tight the second game on Nuke ended up being, pressure could have taken its toll. Instead, we were treated to one of the best contests CS2 has witnessed.

2. BLAST.tv Austin Major Final: Team Vitality 2 – 1 The MongolZ

The BLAST.tv Austin Major Grand Final was yet another match between Team Vitality and The MongolZ, and as is the case with Team Vitality in 2025, they put on another thriller. Being the final of a major, there was plenty at stake, and both teams were more than up for the challenge.

The MongolZ started strong on Mirage, drawing first blood, but Team Vitality showcased its great defence on Dust II to even the match into its final round. While the MongolZ put up an admirable defensive display, Team Vitality showed why it was the world’s best, taking the victory on Inferno.

With this victory, Team Vitality won its first Major Counter-Strike esports tournament of 2025.

1. Intel Extreme Masters Melbourne: Team Vitality 3 – 2 Team Falcons

Once again, Team Vitality delivered an instant classic, this time against Team Falcons in the final of IEM Melbourne in the Rod Laver Arena. As a Grand Final, the tie benefited massively from its best-of-five format, allowing momentum swing after momentum swing as two of CS2’s finest produced an epic battle.

By any metric, the Grand Final clash down under is one of the best CS2 matches of 2025, from how back and forth it was across five maps, to how close it came in the final game, ending 22- 20 in Team Vitality’s favour. The match felt as though it could have gone either way multiple times, adding tension and drama as Vitality finally got over the line with the win.

IEM Melbourne is a Tier 1 event, and one of many trophies added to Team Vitality’s cabinet in a dominant 2025.

Conclusion

With Team Vitality being the most dominant of the Counter-Strike esports teams in 2025, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they feature heavily in this list. Vitality has shown the grit needed to win trophies or make it extremely difficult for opponents, even if a loss is unavoidable.

Still, Team Vitality’s dominance shouldn’t take away from the drama and excellence of many matches that CS2 has produced. The esports scene has broken many records when it comes to viewership in 2025, and the best Counter-Strike matches of the year have been massive contributors in getting more eyes on the sport.
