Gaming hardware company Razer has committed $10 million SGD (£5.87 million) towards the development of gaming and esports in Singapore over the next 12 months.
The funds will be used for supporting Singapore-based esports teams, funding Team Singapore at the Southeast Asian Games, and investing in companies that are either in Singapore or founded by Singaporeans.
Min-Liang Tan, CEO & Co-founder of Razer explained the decision in a social media post: “I’m incredibly grateful for all the support we’ve had from the Singapore government and Singaporeans alike all these years. While I founded Razer in the US, I’m still a Singaporean citizen and we have an office in Singapore with about 500 staff (and currently building a new SEA HQ in Singapore to double our headcount over the next few years to over 1,000!)
“We are one of the largest esports brands in the world, and personally as a Singaporean, I’m looking forward to giving back and doing more for my country.”
Razer supports a host of esports teams and companies, including the likes of Alliance, mousesports, Evil Geniuses, Immortals, SK Gaming, Gen.G esports, Team Queso, and Williams Esports.
Esports will be featured as a medal sport at the Southeast Asian Games in December. Tan has been a big advocate for esports’ inclusion in the competition, meeting with those behind SEA Games to discuss it in November 2018.
Esports Insider says: This investment is one of many to arrive in the Singaporean esports market, with the likes of Team Flash recently securing $1.5 million in seed funding. This investment from Razer will contribute towards significant growth in a market that’s undoubtedly expanding.
