NRG Esports, Rogue, and Luminosity Gaming have secured what’s expected to be the final three franchises in the upcoming Call of Duty league.
NRG Esports has acquired Chicago, London is owned by Rogue’s parent company ReKTGlobal, and Luminosity Gaming’s parent company Enthusiast Gaming has bought Seattle alongside Aquilini Investment Group.
ReKTGlobal, the parent company of Rogue, is the only company of the three that’s not part of Activision Blizzard’s Overwatch League – in which Cloud9 own the London Spitfire franchise. NRG Esports owns San Francisco Shock and Aquilini Investment Group owns Vancouver Titans.
Other franchises already confirmed for the league include Atlanta Esports Ventures’ Atlanta, Envy Gaming’s Dallas, Sterling.VC’s New York, c0ntact Gaming’s Paris, OverActive Media’s Toronto, WISE Ventures’ Minnesota, and Misfits Gaming’s Florida, with both Kroenke Sports & Entertainment and Immortals Gaming Club representing Los Angeles.
If this indeed is the final roster of franchises for the league’s first season, then there are 10 North American cities and only two European cities involved. If home & away matches are implemented from the get-go – which has been rumoured and discussed for a while – then it’s unclear how the competition will be formatted to account for the regional disparity.
Esports Insider says: We fully expect there to be no further franchises announced for the inaugural season of the league. The group of owners that are involved were mostly unpredictable in our eyes, especially since a lot of established CoD brands have left the scene now franchising has come around. There are still practically no details for the league itself, which is strange considering it’s said to start in a handful of months.
