This is not the first time that the telecomms giant has been involved in the esports space, however. Deutsche Telekom partnered with – and provided financial support to – SK Gaming in June last year to aid in its re-entrance into League of Legends.

Back in July, a partnership was announced between Riot Games, Freaks 4U Gaming, and Lagardère Sports which will see Premier Tour expanded into a DACH regional league. The successor to the league is set to commence in 2020.

The Premier Tour 2019 Winter Cup, which runs for most of November, sees 12 teams compete for a currently-undisclosed prize pool. The likes of BIG, Schalke Evolution, mousesports, PENTA 1860, GamerLegion, and Unicorns of Love are all taking part.

Deutsche Telekom joins insurance companies BARMER and R+V Versicherung, snack brand NicNac’s, peripherals company HyperX, and energy company Shell as a partner of the German-speaking league.

Esports Insider says: This partnership shows a renewed interest in German esports for Deutsche Telekom. It appears as if Riot Games and its partners are gearing up to launch the DACH league next year with a solid set of companies supporting it from the get-go. Deutsche Telekom certainly has potential to be a good partner, it just depends on the terms of the deal.
