In addition, EXCEL and Sony will collaborate on educational content pieces and host giveaways.

Matt Beavis, UK Head of PR, Social and Partnerships at Sony’s mobile business, commented: “We have a very targeted approach to marketing on the mobile side of the business at Sony, focusing our effort on communication with specific communities of interest.

“A partnership with EXCEL is aimed at demonstrating to hardcore gaming enthusiasts why Sony is a no-brainer when it comes to smartphone selection.”

According to the release, Sony describes its Xperia smartphone as the ‘perfect device’ for Fortnite players, as it allows them to pair with controllers at a higher screen ratio.

The partnership between the two comes just days after Epic Games closed a $1bn (~£727m) funding round led by Sony, who invested $200m (~£145m). Moreover, this isn’t the first time that Sony’s mobile department has invested in esports, as last year Xperia also became an official partner of the Call of Duty League.

Patrick Collins, Head of Partnerships at EXCEL, added: “At EXCEL ESPORTS we are always looking to work with forward-thinking partners that are innovating tech within the competitive gaming space. Fortnite is a title in which we are looking to create a lasting legacy and it’s great to have partners like Sony who can help us.

“Jaden competes on controller-based PC, but he has been thrilled by the mobile experience Sony offers and sees it as the ideal way for him to keep playing at the highest level whether he’s at home, or on the go,”

Esports Insider says: Sony is tapping into a new market here by showing off its mobile capabilities within the gaming sector – as opposed to following traditional smartphone advertising routes. EXCEL ESPORTS seems like the perfect partner, as it looks to make Fortnite a major part of its operations.
