TL;DR

  • Team-ups in Marvel Rivals enables two or more heroes to work together and unlock special abilities.
  • The team-ups will include one main ‘anchor’ hero, allowing one or several other heroes to receive benefits from their presence.
  • They encourage players to think strategically when picking their hero, as certain team-ups can be highly beneficial during a match.
  • Each season brings new team-ups along with changes to existing ones. Some team-ups are also removed from the game altogether.

Marvel Rivals has frequently been compared to Blizzard’s Overwatch 2, with both being PvP hero-based shooters. However, one of the main features that sets Marvel Rixvals apart from Overwatch, and other similar games, is team-ups.

Marvel Rivals team-ups is a unique way to keep things fresh within the hero shooter genre. Developers NetEase also make changes to the team-ups from season to season, removing some since the game launched and bringing in new ones. But what exactly are Marvel Rivals team-ups, and what kind of abilities do they grant the player?

What are Marvel Rivals Team Ups?

Team-ups in Marvel Rivals are a gameplay mechanic that sets the game apart from others of its kind. It is a feature that allows two or more heroes to team up and unlock special abilities that are otherwise unavailable. These abilities can range from passive bonuses to new offensive skills.

The team-ups work by having one main ‘anchor’ hero. Their inclusion on the team allows for one or several other heroes to receive benefits from their presence. Team-ups have also been carefully designed with each character’s lore, partnerships, and abilities in mind.

For instance, with the Fantastic Four team-up, Sue Storm is the anchor hero, as her inclusion grants the other Fantastic Four members a unique defensive ability. Including Invisible Woman with any of the other members of the Fantastic Four–be it just one other member, two members, or all three of them–will activate a team-up wherein Human Torch, Mr Fantastic, and The Thing can activate additional shields provided by Sue.

This not only takes into account Sue’s shielding abilities, but it also recognises the connection between the characters in Marvel lore. Some team-ups aren’t quite as directly connected in the overarching Marvel universe as this example, but they still make sense as partnerships.

Marvel Rivals team-ups encourage the player to think strategically when picking their hero, as certain team-ups can be highly beneficial during a match. An effective team-up requires all players involved to have a certain level of synergy, encouraging enhanced teamwork along with strategy.

As mentioned, each season mixes things up by changing the team-ups. Some heroes are mixed and matched, with some being added to team-ups and others being removed. New characters are also a factor to consider with team-ups. Other teams-ups are taken out of the game completely. New heroes also factor into the way that team-ups are structured each season, as some get their own, new team-ups, while others are added to existing ones or replace other heroes. There is no doubt that Netease faces a challenging and significant juggling act when it comes to team-ups in Marvel Rivals as a whole.

As of Season six, the following team-ups are no longer in the game. That isn’t to say that they won’t return at some point, but for now, you can no longer use these team-ups:

  • Allied Agents: Black Widow and Hawkeye
  • Ammo Overload: The Punisher, Winter Soldier and Rocket Raccoon
  • Atlas Bond: Iron Fist and Luna Snow
  • Chilling Charisma: Luna Snow and Jeff The Land Shark
  • Dimensional Shortcut: Black Panther and Magik.
  • ESU Alumnus: Spider-Man and Squirrel Girl.
  • Ever-Burning Bond: Human Torch.
  • Guardian Revival: Adam Warlock, Mantis, and Star-Lord.
  • Lunar Force: Cloak & Dagger and Moon Knight.

  • Metallic Chaos: Magneto and Scarlet Witch.
  • Operation: Microchip: Black Widow and The Punisher.
  • Ragnarok Rebirth: Hela, Loki, and Thor.
  • Storming Ignition: Human Torch and Storm
  • Symbiote Bond: Peni Parker, Venom and Spider-Man.
  • Voltaic Union: Captain America, Storm, and Thor.

Conclusion

Team-ups in Marvel Rivals are a great way for developers NetEase to keep things original and interesting. The PvP hero shooter genre is dominating the video game world at the moment, so it is difficult for developers to stand out in such a saturated market. The team-up feature not only adds a unique element to Marvel Rivals, but it also allows players to make use of strategic hero combos to get the upper hand.

There will undoubtedly be more team-ups added to Marvel Rivals in the future, but only time will tell exactly what they will be and who they will include. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all the latest additions to the team ups in Marvel Rivals, as well as any significant changes.
