TL;DR

  • This tier list ranks all 45 Marvel Rivals characters from S-Tier (meta-dominant), so you know who’s climbing (and who’s collapsing) in Season 5.5.
  • Tier placements are based on the latest Season 5.5 patch notes, meta trends, and community data. Each hero is ranked overall and by role – Vanguard, Duelist, or Strategist.
  • Magneto, Gambit, and Hela are currently the strongest picks across Vanguard, Strategist, and Duelist roles.
  • Black Widow, Human Torch, and Black Panther are considered the worst characters in the Marvel Rivals meta at the time of writing.
  • Tier lists can help guide your picks, but map awareness, adaptability, and skill are what win matches.

Who are the best heroes in Marvel Rivals right now? With 45 iconic characters pulled from across the Marvel multiverse, figuring out which hero to main can be a real challenge. While the game does a great job of keeping the roster relatively balanced, some heroes are naturally more viable than others in the current meta, especially in Season 5.5.

To help you lock in the best picks, we’ve ranked 45 characters from S-Tier (must-picks) to D-Tier (off-meta picks) in our Marvel Rivals tier list. We’ve also split the list by role – Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist – so you can easily find the best picks for your preferred playstyle and team comp. Let’s dive in.

Marvel Rivals character tier list explained

Like most team-based hero shooters, Marvel Rivals is all about adaptability. Every new patch brings balance changes (buffs, nerfs, and reworks) that shake up the meta. With each update, the dominant heroes shift, and staying on top of those changes is key.

With 45 characters and multiple roles to choose from, it can be hard to keep track of which characters are worth playing right now.

We’ve rounded up the strongest characters in Marvel Rivals as of January 2026, so you know exactly who to pick, ordered from S-Tier to D-Tier based on their current strengths, consistency, and overall impact in matches.

Marvel Rivals tier list criteria

This is how the Marvel Rivals character ranking works in our tier list:

  • S-Tier – Must-picks: The strongest characters in the current meta, with consistently high win rates and impact.
  • A-Tier – Strong choices: Reliable and well-rounded, working with a wide range of team comps.
  • B-Tier – Situational: Still viable, but often dependent on specific maps, comps, or team coordination.
  • C-Tier – Niche: Either underpowered, nerfed, or easily countered, making them harder to play unless you’re a pro at them.
  • D-Tier – Avoid: Rarely effective in the current meta.

This Marvel Rivals character ranking is based on the most recent patch notes, community stats, and pro-play data from Season 5.5. We’ll continue updating it as the meta shifts, so watch this space.

Vanguard tier list

The Vanguards are the tanks of Marvel Rivals, and with Rogue’s addition in Season 5.5, the class is at an even dozen. These 12 heroes tend to be larger with the most health of the roster. While their playstyles vary, Vanguards can be the reason a push wins a fight or breaks down.

The best of the bunch right now are Groot and Magneto. Groot’s damage output can make him a solo carry, unless specifically countered, and while Groots who aren’t mindful of teammates can lock allies in bad spots, great Groots are massive threats. Magneto is the most archetypal of the Vanguard, dealing respectable damage, being tough as nails, and one of the best at protecting the team. Magneto’s ultimate also counters some support ults, specifically Cloak & Dagger’s.

Doctor Strange, Emma Frost, Hulk, and Peni Parker are the A-Tiers, being reliable and great at their jobs, but not excelling as much as others. For instance, Hulk and Peni can be situational, with Hulk thriving as more of a dive option and Peni being an anti-dive option, with neither being a great solo tank. Emma and Strange are more protective, but Emma is more of a bruiser, working better with another tank, and Strange is certainly mighty, but feels inferior to Magneto.

B-Tiers like newcomer Rogue, Venom, and Angela are viable, but somewhat situational. In general, all Vanguards can be made viable in Marvel Rivals. While these heroes can perhaps lack the damage, like Captain America, or reliability because of cooldowns or how situational they can be, those who know the characters well can still be a danger.

Duelist tier list

As of Season 5.5, duelist still remains the most populated class, acting as the DPS of the game, whether through melee or ranged abilities. There are 23 Duelists in Marvel Rivals as of January 2026.

Hela seems to perpetually sit in the S-Tier, and those who can hit her head shots can deal massive damage. She’s had ups and downs with buffs and nerfs, but ultimately, her kit is very strong. Then, there’s Magik and Daredevil, who are causing Strategists nightmares, especially with Magik’s burst damage able to take out some Strategists out of their ultimates.

A-Tiers are effective at their jobs, and while they aren’t as arguably overpowered as the S-Tier options, they should never be shunned. Psylocke is still a great dive option, Storm hits like an electrified truck, Star-Lord can chase and get away in a flash, Winter Soldier can still be a solo carry with his ult, Phoenix provides extreme flexibility, and Namor remains an incredible, anti-dive DPS.

B-Tiers can do a job, but at the same time, they can be easily countered or just don’t hit quite hard enough to keep up with others, but those who know these characters in and out are still major threats. Spider-Man can be finicky to deal with, but if caught out once, it’s over. Moon Knight is usually effective against a team that groups up, but doesn’t do the single-target damage to deal with highly mobile foes spread across the map. Hawkeye has oneshot potential, but if you want an aim-oriented Duelist, Hela is probably a better option nine times out of 10.

C-Tiers are underpowered, and while there are instances where they can work, they aren’t the most reliable. Iron Man is particularly weak in higher elo, where a good Hela can knock him out of the air, while Squirrel Girl is unpredictable; her lack of precision and inability to deal with aerial threats can be a problem. Scarlet Witch, by nature of her kit, does not translate well at mid or high elo, keeping her at C-Tier, even if she can be powerful in lower elo.

Then, there are the poor D-Tiers. Marvel Rivals is struggling to find a balance for Human Torch, being weak at launch, too strong some patches later, and now weak again. He just doesn’t seem to do enough damage, even if the stat looks good at the end of a game. Black Widow is just outperformed as a sniper by Hawkeye and Hela, and her inability to one-shot even squishy foes remains odd for a sniper. Black Panther has been nerfed to the point of being the tickle monster. Sure, you won’t be able to stop a good Black Panther, because of the movement, but he can’t outdamage the healing, and can just be ignored most of the time.

Strategist tier list

There are 10 Strategists in Marvel Rivals acting as the utility of the team, whether that be healing, shielding, or providing CC.

Gambit came in hot at the start of Season 5 as one of the best characters in Marvel Rivals, being the perfect second or third Strategist, hitting hard and healing well, adding to damage and survivability in equally potent amounts. Rocket Raccoon has remained effective since his Season 2 rework, making him one of the easiest characters to play effectively. Invisible Woman may not hit as hard as Gambit, but with her involved playstyle, CC, shielding, mobility, and stealth, she has so much utility and is always a good option.

Luna Snow hits weirdly hard, and while players have found a way around her ultimate, particularly Magik, her healing is reliable, so long as you can aim. Mantis is a great second or third support with her damage output and boasting, although not quite as overpowered as Gambit, while Adam Warlock reviving, burst healing, and especially Soul Bond can be vital. He’s still strangely slow for a character that can fly in other media.

Loki is complicated, and after being overpowered in earlier seasons, he’s relaxed in B-Tier, asking a lot of his players to be effective. He can be good against dive, with the potential to self-peel.

Jeff the Land Shark may be the game’s mascot, but he’s just fine. He’s simple, with two effective team-ups, Frozen Spitball and New Friends, but his healing isn’t the best, as the way his model works means that he’s easy to headshot. Jeff’s head seems like it’s a quarter of the size of his body, so it can’t be helped. Cloak and Dagger is easy to use, has CC, and would theoretically be A-Tier, if Magneto wasn’t so popular, being their direct counter, especially with his ult.

Then, there’s Ultron, who is still the worst Strategist in Marvel Rivals. He can work decently as a third Strategist, but if he’s just the second support, you probably won’t get enough healing or enough damage, plus Ultron’s kit can feel too slow. Ultron working as a third support is enough for him to be C-Tier, but not further than that.

Tips for choosing the right hero

Picking the right hero in Marvel Rivals can make or break your match, but it depends on your individual playstyle, the current team comp, map, and meta. Here are some tips to help you make smarter picks:

1. Play to your strengths

Don’t force yourself into a role or hero just because it’s meta right now. If you win more playing high-mobility heroes or love being a frontline rank, lean into that. For example:

  • Love topping the charts? Go for Duelists to deal the most DPS.
  • Prefer control and team utility? Strategist heroes are the role for you.
  • Want to lead the charge? Choose from the range of Vanguards.

2. Balance the team comp

Just because you’ve chosen an S-Tier hero doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed the win. Good team synergy is everything, especially when playing Marvel Rivals ranked modes. Make sure your squad covers each role:

  • Frontline (Vanguard): So you’re not instantly folded in a fight
  • Damage (Duelist): To secure kills and deal damage
  • Utility/Support (Strategist): For healing, shielding, or crowd control

You don’t need a perfect formula every time, but Marvel Rivals’ 6v6 format lends itself to having two players in each role. If you’re running three Duelists with zero healing, you may need to re-evaluate.

3. Adapt to patches & meta shifts

Don’t get stuck playing what was working in Season 1. Stay up-to-date with the game’s updates and balance changes. Characters like Emma Frost have seen a boost thanks to recent tweaks that have made her an S-tier pick. Keep an eye on patch notes and community tier lists (like this one) to stay in the loop.

 4. Practice a core roster

Mastering around 2-3 heroes per role gives you options without being overwhelming. Try to have:

  • One main pick (your go-to)
  • One backup (if your main gets taken)
  • One wildcard

Having this versatility lets you adapt to the current situation, making you more flexible in solo queue and team play.

5. Map awareness is key

Certain heroes will shine on specific maps. Open layouts favor long-range duelists like Hawkeye and Black Widow, while maps with tight corridors are best with melee characters like Wolverine.

Learn the map pool and consider factors like chokepoints, verticality, and flank routes. Factoring these into your pick can be the edge that wins you rounds.

Conclusion

With regular balance changes and an ever-shifting meta, Marvel Rivals rewards those who stay adaptable and build up a well-rounded hero pool. But winning isn’t just about tier lists; it’s about how you play.

There are no hard rules on which characters can or cannot be played in Marvel Rivals; this character tier list serves as a rough guideline on what’s working for most players right now.

If you want to play an off-meta pick like Black Widow, go for it! Some D-Tier heroes can still work well in the right hands – the key is playing to your strengths and building smart team comps.
