TL;DR

  • Apex Legends is a battle royale, while Overwatch 2 is a hero shooter more similar to Team Fortress 2.
  • Overwatch 2 offers more game modes than Apex Legends, with PvP and PvE options.
  • Overwatch 2 has a large roster and some heroes that don’t require precise aiming.
  • Apex Legends has a healthier esports scene and, while it lacks the variety of Overwatch 2, it is stronger competitively.

Overwatch and Apex Legends are two of the biggest names in the hero shooter genre. Both have been around for some time, especially in a genre where many titles have failed to maintain relevance. While Overwatch 2 gave the original a little facelift, the core game is largely the same, and despite both games suffering their ups and downs, they’ve maintained loyal fanbases.

Both demonstrate the best of hero shooters at times, as well as the variety the genre offers. Overwatch 2 and Apex Legends are of different moulds and have clearly done a lot right to still receive love to this day.

Bearing that in mind, we’re breaking down how they fare against each other and scoring them out of 10 to see whether Overwatch 2 or Apex Legends comes out on top and which one is for you.

Overwatch 2 vs Apex Legends: Gameplay

Overwatch 2 and Apex Legends may be hero shooters, but they are fundamentally different games. Overwatch 2 is a 5v5 (or sometimes 6v6) team shooter that is in the same vein as Team Fortress 2. While Apex Legends features teams (duo or trio), it is a battle royale competing with the likes of Fortnite.

Overwatch was once considered the pinnacle of the hero-shooter subgenre and essentially kicked off the 2016 boom. While Overwatch 2 is bigger and better in many ways, especially with its roster, its lack of innovation and its quantity-over-quality approach have made it less loved than its predecessor. It’s still a chaotically fun, vibrant game, but it doesn’t quite scratch the same itch as Overwatch 1 did in its first couple of years.

Apex Legends has always been a battle royale with stellar gameplay. Many have praised its shooter mechanics, particularly its blend of gunplay, hero abilities, and movement, and demonstrates Respawn’s proficiency with the shooter genre. Apex requires a good understanding of shooter mechanics, while there are melee-oriented or less aim-reliant options in Overwatch 2.

Ultimately, it depends on what you’re looking for. Apex has stronger core mechanics with less going on, while Overwatch 2 offers more variety. Both have balance issues, while Apex has a bigger problem with cheating. Still, it gets the edge because of its strong core mechanics.

  • Apex Legends Score: 8/10
  • Overwatch 2 Score: 6/10

Overwatch 2 vs Apex Legends: Game modes

While there’s always an Apex Legends update around to integrate its Limited Time Modes, Overwatch 2 thrives with its sheer number of game modes on offer. This is mainly because of OW2’s subgenre affording it more wriggle room in its game modes, and because it’s in its own original universe, it has more freedom with its story. On the other hand, Apex Legends shares a universe with the Titanfall series.

Overwatch 2 offers PvE options alongside its numerous map game modes and arcade. It may not have the story Blizzard originally promised, but with seasonal mini-games, there is plenty to do for those who want a break from the standard play modes.

That’s not to say Apex Legends doesn’t offer a lot with its game modes, but it’s difficult to compare to Overwatch 2’s immense variety, even if more was initially promised.

  • Apex Legends Score: 7/10
  • Overwatch 2 Score: 8/10

Apex Legends vs Overwatch 2: Characters

It would be impossible to talk about Apex Legends vs Overwatch 2 without looking at their character rosters. Both have vibrant, international casts, issues with balancing said casts, and are filled with humans and robots alike.

There are 26 Apex Legends characters, and, for the most part, the design of these characters is consistent, from their visuals to their abilities. This could be due to how infrequently they are added, and there hasn’t been a new addition to the Apex cast since Alter in 2024.

By contrast, there are a whopping 44 Overwatch 2 characters, making it one of the largest in the hero shooter genre. These designs aren’t as consistent in quality, but the original 21 introduced in the first Overwatch were something truly special. Blizzard may still be searching for that level of quality years later, but it struck gold back in 2016.

Apex Legends’ cast is strong, but the original Overwatch cast is iconic. Many of the additions aren’t quite as iconic, but the variety that many add can’t be denied, giving even those without good aim the chance to enjoy Overwatch 2.

  • Apex Legends Score: 7/10
  • Overwatch 2 Score: 9/10

Apex Legends vs Overwatch 2: Esports Scenes

Overwatch 2 has a controversial esports scene. The downfall of the Overwatch League has been well documented, and many believe that the scene is dead, even though the Overwatch Champions Series (OWCS) has replaced it.

While Overwatch 2’s esports scene has made somewhat of a comeback by being added to the Esports World Cup, Apex Legends has gone from strength to strength. Despite not being as big a name in the general gaming community, the ALGS has looked healthy in Year 5, with some signs earlier in the year that it might end up bigger than Fortnite.

Overwatch 2’s esports scene has been meandering for some time and still suffers from the collapse of the Overwatch League, especially with all the resources Blizzard put into it. Apex Legends’ ALGS has continued to thrive in 2025, and it’s clear that it takes the crown here.

  • Apex Legends Score: 9/10

Conclusion

When we tally the scores, Apex Legends is the clear winner, and while the games are somewhat close in most categories, the esports scene is what sets them apart. While Overwatch 2 has greater variety with its characters and game modes, Apex is better suited to competitive play with its tighter gameplay and stronger esports scene. It ultimately depends on what people want out of their hero shooter.
