TL;DR

  • The Wolverine Weapon X skin is a unique take on the version of Logan that appears in the Weapon X comic line from Marvel Comics.
  • The Weapon X skin was released in Marvel Rivals on June 6, 2025.
  • It is available to purchase separately for 1,400 units or as part of the Wolverine Weapon X bundle for 1,600 units.
  • The main issue that some are having with the Wolverine Weapon X skin is the lack of skin in the design.
  • The other issue highlighted is that it would have made more sense for Weapon X to be a legendary skin.

NetEase Games recently released the Weapon X skin for Wolverine in Marvel Rivals. The skin is the developers’ take on Wolverine’s design from the infamous Weapon X Wolverine origin story. The skin has been relatively well received by most players, but some have not been as positive.

So, what is the problem that some are having with the Weapon X skin, and is it an issue that should be taken seriously? Let’s dive deeper into Wolverine’s Marvel Rivals Weapon X skin to see what has gotten certain fans so frustrated.

Wolverine’s Weapon X Marvel Rivals skin

The Wolverine Weapon X skin in Marvel Rivals is a unique take on the version of Logan that appears in the Weapon X comic line from Marvel Comics. These comics detail Wolverine’s origin, showing how a regular man named Logan was transformed into a living weapon with an adamantium skeleton. Wolverine was given the codename Weapon X, hence why his origin storyline has the same title.

The Weapon X skin was released in Marvel Rivals on June 6, 2025. It is available to purchase for 1,400 units on its own or as part of the Wolverine Weapon X bundle for 1,600 units. Oddly enough, the skin is also available as part of the Sunshine Land Shark and Weapon X Combo bundle, for 2,800 units.

Why is the Weapon X Wolverine skin dividing opinion?

The main issue that some are having with the Wolverine Weapon X skin is the lack of skin in the design. In the comics, Wolverine is either unclothed or wearing tiny shorts when he is shown as Weapon X. Most of the time, though, he is butt naked.

With the Marvel Rivals skin, Wolverine is wearing shorts that go down to his knees, making it far too modest for some fans.

Reddit user Impossible-Coach-273 highlights the confusion surrounding this controversy. The post reads

“I know people are upset about his shorts and all I really have to say is…seriously?? Like, the fact that he’s wearing longer shorts is upsetting you to that degree?? Again I’m just really confused on why this is such a big deal.”

It’s safe to say that Impossible-Coach-273 is voicing what most of us are thinking about this criticism. Marvel Rivals is a game that is rated T for teens, meaning that it is most appropriate for players who are age 13 and over. There is absolutely no way that a game rated T is going to let players run around as a naked Wolverine. Sure, they could have made his shorts a little shorter, but does it really matter?

To be fair, Wolverine does show a fair amount of skin with this outfit. He is wearing longer shorts, but his chest and abs are on full display. His hairy calves also make an appearance, though his knees are covered by metal plates (sorry, knee enthusiasts).

Some Marvel Rivals players have expressed a genuine concern with the skin, though. In the same Reddit thread, PeachyPunks notes that their complaint revolves around the skin not being legendary.

“I feel like Weapon X is one of Wolverine’s most iconic looks, so I would have preferred it to be legendary, and it be given all the upgrades that come with the legendary status.”

This is a much more reasonable and understandable issue, and one that makes a lot of sense.

Is there a broader issue with the Weapon X Wolverine skin?

There isn’t much else to the issue other than fans wanting to see more of Wolverine’s skin with the Weapon X outfit. However, it does arguably highlight a broader problem with fans being too critical. Die-hard Wolverine and Weapon X enthusiasts might be disappointed that they aren’t getting a skin that is 100% accurate to the comics, but most people will know why that isn’t possible in a T-rated game.

Even games for older players don’t allow players to run around stark naked (at least not all the time). Shorter shorts or underwear could have been possible, but it would have made little difference to the overall design. Expectation and reality can be difficult to keep balanced, but anyone who was truly expecting the Weapon X skin to be completely comic-accurate might have to consider lowering their expectations.

The issue highlighted by PeachyPunks is another matter. It would have made more sense for Weapon X to be a legendary skin, but NetEase seems more concerned with making legendary skins for the more cutesy characters, such as Squirrel Girl and Jeff the Land Shark.

Conclusion

The issue of Wolverine wearing too many clothes is a silly one that isn’t something to be taken too seriously (especially when looking at the numerous funny comments on the aforementioned Reddit thread). However, the problem of Weapon X not being chosen to become a legendary skin is a much more prominent issue and one that makes for a pertinent topic of discussion.
