Shotcall nets $2.2m seed round for streaming monetisation platform

Shotcall, a platform that allows streamers, content creators, and organisations to offer paid engagement opportunities to fans, has announced a $2.2m (~£1.68m) seed round.

The round was led by Initial Capital and New Stack, whilst Lerer Hippeau closed the investment process. Shotcall will use the funding to integrate its platform with more game publishers and align the brand with celebrities and artists.

Thomas Gentle, co-founder and CEO of Shotcall, commented in a release: “If you have a fan base and you game, you should be on Shotcall. There are dozens of different sites for coaching, hosting tournaments, streaming, and other events, but Shotcall is the only platform that houses all of these interactions under one roof, and not while having to be on the sidelines.

“Shotcall is a two-fold solution for the gaming community. It allows fans to actually play their favourite games with the hosts they admire, while also creating important monetisation opportunities for creators who are resistant to asking their community for direct financial support. Shotcall is a community where both the fan and creator have an incredible return on their investment.”

Shotcall is a platform and marketplace that lets creators engage with fans via community events. Streamers can, for example, offer private competitions, coaching sessions, charity tournaments, and more, with the option to charge money for those events if desired. The goal is to provide creators with additional monetisation opportunities while increasing direct engagement with participating fans.

“We’ve been very fortunate to already partner with some amazing athletes and organisations in the esports realm including F2K, Gamers.Vote, OffTheGlassGG, and more,” Gentle told Esports Insider. “Most recently, in April we worked with the Seattle Sounders to host a charity event on Shotcall for their Covid Relief Fund.”

He continued: “Seeing the overwhelming fan excitement and monetary success of events like this, both for Shotcall and for our partners, we fully intend to continue expanding upon these kinds of relationships to work with professional esports athletes and teams. Shotcall’s tournaments and wager matches, in particular, will give esports athletes the opportunity to showcase and monetise their skills on a global platform.”

Esports Insider says: Shotcall offers streamers, content creators, and pro players the ability to further monetise their time with direct engagement opportunities. It’ll be interesting to see how bigger-name creators and celebrities embrace the platform as it scales thanks to this seed funding.
