Blockchain company Polkadot and esports organisation HEROIC have teamed up to create a Web3-focused community Counter-Strike 2 tournament.

According to a release, the ‘Proof-of-Frag’ community-driven event, scheduled for May 10–11, aims to bridge the worlds of esports with Web3.

Proof-of-Frag: Web3 & Gaming

The tournament, hosted on the FACEIT platform, is open to all skill levels. It offers a $5,000 (~£3760) prize pool and a broadcasted playoff stage on HEROIC’s Twitch channel.

With its ‘game → quest → win’ structure, Proof-of-Frag showcases sharpshooting skill and invites players into a gamified Web3 ecosystem.

Polkadot, backed by the world’s largest decentralised autonomous organisation (DAO), is sponsoring the event and weaving blockchain into the very structure of the community engagement.

According to HEROIC’s Director of Strategy, Kim Tvedt, the collaboration unites two highly active and meme-savvy communities: blockchain enthusiasts and esports fans.

“This unprecedented partnership connects two highly engaged, meme-driven communities and marks the start of an exciting collaboration with Polkadot to create unique content, experiences, and blockchain-powered activations,” said Tvedt.

This is not HEROIC’s first foray into web3 collaborations. Last year, the organisation collaborated with Thunderpick to launch ‘Path to Pros’, another grassroots-focused CS2 initiative that allowed amateur players to compete for a $17,500 (~£13,100) prize pool and a chance to play against HEROIC’s pro roster.

That tournament saw monthly qualifiers, skin giveaways and influencer involvement, setting a precedent for engaging, community-first esports events.

Polkadot’s Strategic Entry into Esports

Polkadot’s decision to enter the gaming sector through HEROIC is a deliberate strategy to integrate Web3 into mainstream culture.

Unlike prior blockchain gaming efforts that relied heavily on token speculation, like the saga with the recently renewed Flappy Bird, Proof-of-Frag is designed as a pure gaming experience, with blockchain integration enhancing rather than distracting from the gameplay.

While the current activation is more about marketing and exposure than blockchain utility within the game, it lays the groundwork for future integrations, potentially involving digital identity, verifiable achievements, or NFT rewards.

With Polkadot as its official blockchain partner, HEROIC is also a partner that seems willing to explore what the relationship between esports and web3 can offer.

Registration for Proof-of-Frag is now open. This event offers players a shot at prize money and a front-row seat to a live stream that will be broadcast worldwide.
