Mark Rubin departs Ubisoft as XDefiant officially shuts down

Mark Rubin, Executive Producer of free-to-play arena shooter title XDefiant, has departed Ubisoft following the game’s shut down on June 3rd, 2025.

In addition to leaving the French developer and publisher, Rubin has announced he will be leaving the gaming industry entirely.

In an X post, Rubin thanked the XDefiant community for playing and promoting the title, along with the development team, which worked on its creation before it launched in May 2024.

Alongside expressing gratitude, the former Executive Producer revealed that XDefiant received ‘little to no marketing’ following its launch, in addition to the development team not ‘having the right resources’ available to create post-launch content and address any issues that arose.

“I would say something remarkable happened with this game in that although we had very little marketing, we still had the fastest acquisition of players in the first few weeks for a Ubisoft title just from you guys all talking about and promoting the game,” said Rubin.

“I really want to praise and salute all of the devs that worked on XDefiant! The cards were heavily stacked against you, but you managed to produce a really fun and terrific game!”

Outside of XDefiant, Rubin also spent nine years as an Executive Producer at Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward. During his tenure, Rubin worked on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, two of the most successful titles in the history of the franchise.

XDefiant’s Esports Ambitions

From an esports perspective, XDefiant was a failure from the outset despite hosting an All-Star Series early on to showcase its capabilities in a competitive capacity.

Ubisoft had planned to launch an esports ecosystem in 2025, according to an Esports.net report, but nothing surfaced with the title closing down after three post-launch seasonal updates.

With developers working on an engine that wasn’t optimised for an arena shooter title, the focus moved away from esports and to addressing various issues, ranging from netcode to inconsistent performance across PC and consoles.
