Indonesia’s Vice President, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, hosted representatives from MOONTON Games and local esports players at Jakarta’s Vice Presidential Palace .

The meeting reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the growth of the national esports ecosystem alongside assisting the development of young talent.

During the meeting that took place on March 2nd, the Vice President and the developer of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang discussed how the esports industry has evolved to become an integral part of Indonesia’s digital and creative economy by creating new employment opportunities and increasing the country’s presence on the international stage.

In addition to highlighting the economic impact of esports, the discussion also emphasised the importance of building a broader public understanding of esports, showcasing it as an area with a variety of career opportunities beyond players competing in high-profile competitions.

“The Vice President shared that he is grateful and excited to see how MLBB and the gaming industry are growing very well in Indonesia,” said Cherry Xia, Vice President and Head of Publishing at MOONTON Games. “He also expressed his hope that we can have more collaborations in the future and see programmes not only in Jakarta, but expanding to other regions across Indonesia.”

In recent years, Indonesia has become a hotbed for esports activity, with regional leagues recording huge viewership figures and international tournaments taking place across the country. 2024 saw the Honor of Kings Championship held in Jakarta with the Malaysian side of Black Shrew Esport taking home the lion’s share of the $1m (~£748,245) prize pool.

Continued Government Support

After the Youth and Sports Ministry and the Indonesian Sports Council officially recognised esports as a sport in 2020, Indonesia has continued to assist the growth of the esports and gaming industries through collaborations with publishers and the hosting of international tournaments.

In 2025, Indonesia’s Creative Economy Minister, Teukui Reifky Harsya, expressed optimism regarding the ability of esports to drive economic growth.

With the Indonesian government remaining committed to expanding the country’s esports ecosystem, the meeting with MOONTON Games is a positive sign as both parties look to continue building on the foundations laid over the last six years.
