The Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) has unveiled changes to the circuit’s format ahead of the 2022-23 season.
The upcoming season includes changes to the format in order to create year-on-year stability and dates for all tournaments taking place over the next 12 months.
In addition to a new format, Rocket League developer Psyonix has announced a $6m (~£5.2m) prize pool that will be shared across three splits and the season-ending world championship.
The 2022-23 season features a ‘refinement’ in the existing format. The upcoming season will be divided into the Fall, Winter, and Spring Splits with each of them containing an Open, Cup, and an Invitational tournament.
Open events will feature open qualifications while cups will contain a mixture of qualifiers and teams with enough season points. Each Split is concluded with a Major where teams can earn points that count towards qualification to the world championship. The format for the world championship remains unchanged from the 2021-22 season.
The 2022-23 RLCS season begins on October 7th with the North American Fall Open while the world championship will conclude the season in August.
Prior to the start of the season, Psyonix entered a partnership with convenience store chain 7-Eleven that includes naming rights to a North American regional RLCS event.
Psyonix says more news on the upcoming season will emerge ‘in the upcoming weeks’ as the circuit retains a mixture of online and LAN events following the Covid-19 pandemic. A full list of changes, including information on RLCS event sign-ups, can be found in Psyonix’s latest blog post.
