The PUBG Mobile Global Championship 2022, the final LAN tournament of the season, concluded on January 8th and has recorded a slight increase in viewing figures in comparison to its previous edition.
The tournament, which saw Turkish organisation S2G Esports claim the trophy, peaked at 852,000 viewers according to analytics firm Esports Charts.
The PUBG Mobile Global Championship is the final event of the season and is operated by game developer KRAFTON as well as technology company Tencent. A total of 48 teams took part in the tournament, which featured a $4m (~£3.2m) prize pool. The inaugural Global Championship took place in 2020 with the grand finals held in Dubai.
The 2022 tournament’s peak viewing figures of 851,780 makes it the fifth-highest PUBG Mobile event in the history of the esport. Compared to the PUBG Mobile Global Championship 2021 Finals, the peak number of viewers increased by 31.7% despite the removal of BGMI (Battlegrounds Mobile India) from the Indian market last year.
The most-watched match of the tournament was Round 18 during the grand finals, which crowned S2G Esports as the winners and the recipients of $510,000 (~£417,934) in prize money.
In addition to impressive peak viewership growth, the 2022 PUBG Mobile Global Championship recorded a total of 27.3m hours watched. However, it’s important to note that the competition is still way being viewership figures recorded at the PUBG Mobile Global Championship Season 0 in 2020/2021. The inaugural Global Championship has a peak viewership of 3.8m, according to the esports data platform.
The 2022 PUBG Mobile Global Championship took place in Malaysia’s Battle Arena and the Jakarta International Expo in Indonesia’s capital city.
The country is heavily involved in the PUBG Mobile scene, and hosts one of four regional leagues alongside Thailand, Vietnam, and MYSGPG (Malaysia/Singapore/Philippines). During the event, it was revealed that the next location for the Global Championship will be Turkey.
