Following an update for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on May 7th, 2025, several Call of Duty League (CDL) players have criticised the impact of its arrival.
Although the contents of the update haven’t directly impacted the Call of Duty esports scene, the secondary effects have resulted in the league reverting to an old patch after teams began practising on the most recent build.
LA Thieves player Dylan ‘Envoy’ Hannon shared his frustration in a social media post, revealing Black Ops 6’s Call of Duty caster tool is bugged when used for event broadcasts.
As a result of the bug, the CDL will use an older build for the remainder of the Major 4 qualifiers unless a fix for the bug is applied.
“[A] couple days practice on new patch, now going back to the old patch (which was said to be impossible for years) only because CoD caster is bugged for the stream. Not a serious esport,” said Envoy on social media.
Alongside the bug with the in-game broadcasting tool, Toronto Ultra player Joseph ‘JoeDeceives’ Romero stated online that teams are unable to practice using online accounts created for competition. “Now we can’t even scrim on CDL accounts,” the player added.
Does Call of Duty League Need Better Developer Support?
With three different studios working on the Call of Duty franchise, support for its esports scene has varied in recent years. In previous seasons, Treyarch has provided extensive support for the CDL, but in 2025, the developer rarely interacts with the top tier of competition.
In addition to flawed updates, the unofficial gentlemen’s agreement continues to hold a presence within Call of Duty esports as players optimise the title for competitive play further than the rules laid out by league operations.
It’s unclear if Treyarch will implement another update so the CDL can use the latest build for competitive play, but for the time being, the patch used for the past three months will be featured for the final Major of the season.
