North American organisation Evil Geniuses started 2017 emphatically, with a video released on Twitter by Dota 2 captain turned CEO Peter “PPD” Dager announcing a few of their plans for the upcoming year mainly for FGC and Starcraft II.

Arguably the biggest part of the announcement was the fact that EG is departing Starcraft II, releasing their two remaining players Geoff “InControL” Robertson and Chris “HuK” Loranger. In addition, Justin Wong, Yusuke Momochi, Eduardo “PR Balrog” Perez and Yuko “Chocoblanka” Momochi removed from their roster of competitors in the fighting games genre.

It’s not all doom and gloom though – as PPD reiterates the fact that the extremely talented Dota 2 roster will not be making any changes ahead of the second Valve Major in April. Additionally, Chris “NYChrisG” Gonzaelz is added to the fighting games division and Kevin “PPMD” Nanney returns to the Super Smash Bros roster after his absence in 2016 due to health issues.

Esports Insider says: It’s a shame that Starcraft II is now gone from arguably one of the biggest esports organisations in the world, but at the same time it’s no real surprise. The scene that still exists is predominantly based in the East and is predominantly dominated by competitors in that region. It’ll be interesting to see how the FGC scene develops this year and we’ll have to wait and see if their Dota 2 roster can find the winning formula. Evil Geniuses will still undoubtedly be amongst the top teams in near enough every esport they touch.
