TL;DR

  • Counter-Strike 2, developed by Valve, debuted in September 2023 for PC.
  • VALORANT, developed by Riot Games, debuted in 2020 for PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC.
  • Both are free-to-play first-person shooter games that require players to work in teams to complete certain objectives.
  • Counter-Strike 2 builds on previous games in the series, utilising its gameplay mechanics and maps, which first appeared in the late 90s.
  • VALORANT was inspired by Counter-Strike, so you may spot some similarities between the two.

If you’ve been a longtime fan of first-person shooters, you’ve likely played Counter-Strike 2 or VALORANT recently. Developed by Valve and Riot Games, respectively, these free-to-play games have become two of the most popular esports games worldwide.

Both games let players work together in a set of teams, completing objectives in order to earn cosmetics and more. Some teams have evolved to take part in league-based matches, with huge prize pools. But if you’re new to one or both of these games, it could be a challenge to decide which one to try out first. With this in mind, our guide below will help you choose the one for you.

CS2 vs VALORANT: Overview

Counter-Strike 2 launched on September 27, 2023, for PC as a replacement for Counter-Strike: GO, which came out in 2012. A free-to-play title, it’s already outpaced CS: GO and become the true successor to the original Counter-Strike title from 1999.

VALORANT, developed by Riot Games, launched in 2020 for PC as a competitor to Counter-Strike, which has found its own niche in the free-to-play first-person-shooter category.

Both games require players to work in 5v5 teams to complete certain objectives, such as defusing bombs, defeating another team, and more. They are slower-paced than other shooters like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone, requiring players to plan rather than shoot as soon as the match begins.

The main difference between Counter-Strike 2 and VALORANT is the type of characters. In the former, you simply choose between counter-terrorists or terrorists, but in VALORANT, you play as ‘Agents’ that all have different abilities that can be used.

CS2 vs VALORANT: Maps & weapons

When it comes to maps, Counter-Strike 2 loses the battle here over VALORANT, having just 13, which include Ancient, Overpass, Mirage, Nuke, and Vertigo. For Riot Games’ title, there are 17, such as Abyss, Bind, Haven, and more.

Counter-Strike 2 features far more weapons than VALORANT, having 53 to use compared to the latter’s 17. When players choose either Counter-terrorists or Terrorists, there are different weapon sets to choose from. But in VALORANT, weapons are divided into just two categories, where any agent in the game can use a gun of their choosing.

Every round in Riot Games’ shooter begins with The Classic, a starting pistol, and you can then use the “buy menu” to upgrade to a different type (or size) of firearm, depending on your playstyle. Both CS2 and VALORANT feature seven maps for their ranked play, so you won’t need to learn many.

CS2 vs VALORANT: Teams & agents

A big factor in deciding between Counter-Strike 2 and VALORANT is the gameplay of both titles. Valve’s game goes for realism with a battle in the counter-terrorism world, while Riot Games’ title is more whimsical, with agents having different abilities.

It’s this factor that could decide which title you pick out of the two. If you want something more down-to-earth, go for Counter-Strike 2. Otherwise, VALORANT could be your title of choice.

CS2 vs VALORANT: Fanbases

Fanbases can be another deciding factor when choosing between a bunch of games in the same genre. In the case of Counter-Strike 2, it attracts around 1.5 million players a day, according to SteamDB, along with a peak of 1,862,531 players in April 2025.
In VALORANT’s case, the player count is significantly higher, with over 17 million playing the game in September 2025 alone, according to VALORANT Tracker. In addition, an all-time 24-hour peak of 6,861,264 players easily outmatches Counter-Strike 2.

CS2 vs VALORANT: Esports scenes

In the esports scene, both Counter-Strike 2 and VALORANT are hugely popular with players and viewers alike. CS2’s Major Championships pit 32 teams against one another in order to take a slice of the $1,250,000 prize pool. In VALORANT’s case, there’s the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT), which pits 48 teams across four international leagues to win a slice of the $2,250,000 prize pool.

But when it comes to viewership figures, CS2 wins here at 2,748,434, compared to VALORANT’s 1,687,848.

CS2 vs VALORANT: Ranks

CS2 ranks vs VALORANT’s ranking system is initially quite similar, with the two games following a tier system comprised of different levels that correspond to your MMR or rank rating points, respectively. Where things get more complicated, however, is the fact that CS2 has both a rank for its Competitive mode and a CS Rating for the Premier mode, with the latter being stricter in match selection and stipulations.

VALORANT ranks vs CS2’s are a little more transparent, and there are more ranks with a higher amount of tiers needed to reach. While VALORANT has no rank decay, you’ll quickly notice your CS2 rank starts dropping if you’re inactive anywhere from 17 to 30 days. You have to maintain.

Conclusion

Indeed, with VALORANT winning the battle against Counter-Strike 2 in player counts, viewers over streaming services like YouTube and Twitch, as well as higher prize pools at various esports events, you may be tempted to look at Riot Games’ title. However, as a series, Counter-Strike has a greater understanding of the online first-person shooter category, and its longevity is down to Valve’s support, the community, and much more.

It’s not easy to decide between Counter-Strike 2 and VALORANT, as both games require players to invest a lot of time to get used to the playstyles, modes, content updates, and more. But as they’re both free-to-play, there’s no harm in trying both games out after looking at our above guide, to see which one suits you best.
