TL;DR

  • Fortnite is developed by Epic Games and has been available since July 2017 on consoles, PCs, and mobile devices.
  • ‘Ranks’ appeared in 2023 as a way for players to be better matched with those who are similarly skilled in the game.
  • There are 18 Fortnite ranks in total across the tiers of Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Elite, Champion, and Unreal.
  • Progression in Fortnite is point-based, and allocation is determined by the number of eliminations, game-ending placements, and objectives met.
  • Fortnite ranks are separate for game modes such as Battle Royale, Zero Build, OG, and Ballistic, and do not carry over.
  • Once a season or chapter ends, your rank resets, taking you back to the start.

The upper echelon of the Fortnite ranks sets apart the casual players from the professionals earning cash with their Victory Royales. Since Fortnite released in 2017, Epic Games has been refining the battle royale formula, with seasons and chapters bringing improvements and additions to gameplay mechanics, along with all the cosmetics to reel new players in.

Fortnite ranks appeared first in 2023 through the Ranked Mode, allowing players to enter the grind and compete against players of comparable skill. From Bronze to Unreal, these ranks ensure the playing field is as even and competitive as possible. Of course, playing Ranked isn’t mandatory, but the extra competitive edge can add to the fun.

If you want to know what ranks mean in Fortnite, our guide will help you stay in the know.

What is the highest rank in Fortnite?

Unreal is the best rank in Fortnite, which is for only the very best, and thus, there are only a few in this upper echelon. Fortnite Tracker’s latest statistics state that roughly 5% of players, or just under 400,000 players, are at this level.

Those in this rank are the ultra-skilled, streaming personalities, or pro players. While Peter “PeterBot” Kata is widely considered the best Fortnite player in 2026 and holds an Unreal rank, he is currently ranked third, while 1337soup sits in the top spot.

Fortnite ranks & tiers explained

Fortnite ranks are split into eight different tiers, which consist of:

  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Diamond
  • Elite
  • Champion
  • Unreal

Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond are split into several levels, providing further differentiation for the ranks.

Ranked matches are available in both Battle Royale and Zero Build modes. This means that, while the building mechanic is incredibly iconic, you can climb the Fortnite ranks without it if you prefer a more standard, battle royale experience.

How the Fortnite ranking system works

Fortnite’s ranking system is explicitly tied to your performance, so everything you do, from eliminating opponents to completing objectives, relates to progressing through the ranks.

Points are also added for damage done to opponents and objects, reviving teammates, playing solo, taking part in the current season’s events, like the Megazord in the recent Shock N’ Awesome season, and much more.

Consistency and persistence are key to advancing up the ranked ladder. If you keep on playing with the goal of improving in mind every match, you’ll likely achieve a higher rank at the end of a season compared to the start, and see gradual gains.

You will not keep that rank when the season concludes, however, as your rank is reset back to Bronze all over again.

Rank distribution in Fortnite

Again, according to Fortnite Tracker, there are over 7.6 million players playing Fortnite Ranked in 2026, and that has led to a reasonably varied distribution. While Unreal is the highest rank, it isn’t the least populated. That title belongs to Diamond 3, where around 1% of players (75,000 people) compete (as of January 2026).

The lowest Fortnite rank is Bronze 1, where everyone begins their competitive journey. 17% of players sit at this rank, with the rank above, Bronze 2, having the highest percentage of players at 22.6%, as of Chapter 7, Season 1.

Bar graph titled "Fortnite Ranked Battle Royale Leaderboard" shows player rank distribution, with Bronze tiers highest at 10%-20%. Other ranks, such as Gold, Platinum, Diamond, and Ultimate, are below 10%

Your placement depends on how many points you earn during each match; playing well consistently could see your rank improve with three to six wins, but average performance could make the process much longer.

While not quite the best Fortnite rank possible, Elite and Champion are still highly sought-after positions that very few players will attain despite their best efforts. Currently, 1.5% and 2% of players are in Elite and Champion, respectively, with Champion being the second-highest rank behind Unreal.

It’s important to remember that all ranks in Fortnite are separate to both Battle Royale and Zero Build modes, in addition to Reload, OG, and Ballistic.

For example, if you rank as Champion in Battle Royale, that won’t be mirrored in other modes. It’s arguably a fun route that Epic Games has decided on, as you could try to aim for a high rank to make the most of each mode.

How to rank up faster in Fortnite

With almost any competitive game, there is no easy way to rank up in Fortnite. The best way to start is to improve your level by working on your fundamental skills and applying them to each game moving forward.

An example of a fundamental skill would be improving your gunplay and aim. This will allow you to live longer in battle royales, as your performance in gunfights will get better. Focusing on using Fortnite’s movement through the environment and items is also worth working on.

Fortnite guns are not given to you by default. Instead, you must find them in chests, buy them from machines, or loot them from defeated enemies.

There have been over 200 weapons in the game since its 2017 debut, with them changing drastically with every subsequent chapter and season, whether that’s cosmetically or new ones being added. There’s also the factor of limited-time weapons and items, which can heavily impact your levelling up.

As a result, the best you can do is learn to control a weapon’s recoil and fire in short and controlled bursts from both a crouched and standing position instead of solely relying on a run-and-gun strategy. Similarly, go into Playground Mode and experiment with the guns, the weapon spread, and the damage down at a distance.

Once you’re comfortable with Fortnite’s movement and weapon mechanics, you will see an increase in performance and gain greater experience by playing Fortnite on your own. Completing challenges, focusing on slaying enemies, and chasing high placement will help you improve both your skills and ranking. You don’t need to be the last one standing every time, but consistently getting into the top 10, or top five when possible, will increase your rank consistently. Consistency should be the goal, not winning once, then crashing out of a match straight after.

Patience is the most important virtue, just as regular practice and learning from your mistakes will see you become a better player overall.

Fortnite rank decay

There is no Fortnite rank decay in 2026. However, ranks reset at the end of each season (and chapter) in Battle Royale and Zero Build ranked modes.

Epic Games announces when the seasons are coming to an end on its social media pages, and things differ with other ranked modes, such as Reload and Ballistic.

Once a season resets, there will be a series of placement matches to determine your rank (and subsequent skill level) against the competition based on your number of eliminations and placements in matches.

You won’t necessarily start from Bronze 1, as your new starting Fortnite rank will be based on your performance during the previous season.

Typically, Fortnite seasons last 90 days. Theoretically, this should give you enough time to build up or retain your rank with consistent play. If you play infrequently throughout a season, you might not get back to or build on the rank you had last season. It is also believed that players in Elite, Champion, and Unreal ranks, which do not contain tiers, are unlikely to be docked when the seasons change.

Conclusion

If you ever wanted to know how Fortnite ranks really worked, hopefully our guide has left you without questions. With eight ranks, five of which are split into three divisions, the climb can be a fun way to add some competitiveness to your Fortnite experience.

Whether you have your eye on Battle Royale, Zero Build, or even Ballistics, you should have all the information you need to start your ranked grind.
