Riot Games is always looking for ways to shake up League of Legends, with new game modes to rival mainstays like ARAM. And in 2023, it dropped LoL Arena.
Originally launched as a limited-time LoL event, Arena is a fast-paced 2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2 (16-player) brawler that trades lanes and towers for tight maps and over-the-top OP builds that end matches in minutes, not hours.
Now, Arena’s return in 2025 has changed the game with major updates: a different ranked system, more Augments, and even Guests of Honor. If you’re grinding for glory, here’s everything you need to know before jumping into the Arena.
What is Arena in League of Legends?
Instead of the usual 5v5 you’ll find in Summoner’s Rift, Arena in League of Legends is a 16-player brawl (2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2), with no turrets, minions, or jungle objectives to worry about. It was initially introduced alongside the Soul Fighter event in 2023 and has undergone a complete revamp for 2025, now named Arena: The Grand Reckoning.
As a PvP mode, players are paired off into eight teams, facing off against other duos in multiple rounds. There are currently six different arenas, or maps, where players will compete in: Frostbite Thicket, Ancestral Woods, Desert Oasis, Magma Chamber, Koi Pond, and Reckoner Arena.
Each LoL team pools damage into one shared health bar, losing HP after being defeated. Once your team’s health drops to zero, it’s game over completely. Like with TFT, you can opt to spectate to see who wins or leave the match to requeue.
The last pairing left standing is crowned the winner, walking away with extra ‘Fame,’ League’s new progression track for Arena.
How does Arena work?
Every round begins with a preparation phase, where players get power-ups like Augments, Gold, and Anvils. Once this timer ends, each team of two is transported to one of six unique rings, where they’ll battle against another pairing. Win the round and move. Lose, and the shared HP bar takes a hit based on the current round number. This continues until only one duo is left standing.
Augments
Augments are powerful enhancements that go beyond items, with over 100 available. There are three different Augment tiers: Silver > Gold > Prismatic, increasing in intensity.
Anvils
You can buy most Summoner’s Rift items with Gold, but Anvils also offers Arena-specific items and perks in rounds 3, 7, and 10.
- Prismatic – 4,000 Gold: Randomised choice between all Prismatic items.
- Legendary – 2,000 Gold: Randomised choice between all Legendary items in your desired class (Fighter, Mage, Tank, etc).
- Stat – 750 Gold: Randomised choice between all raw stat upgrades.
Guests of Honor
Replacing the previous ‘Cameos’ mechanic, Guests of Honor are special rotating champions that apply a global rule that alters gameplay for the rest of the match. During Rounds 2 and 8 of each Arena match, players vote to select one of three randomly chosen champions to be the Guest of Honor.
Guests of Honor don’t fight in the match themselves, but their presence tweaks how the game will unfold for everyone. For example, Vladimir can grant every player a matching Augment, while Mordekaiser forces each player into a 1v1 duel in the Death Realm. Guests of Honor make every Arena match feel different, adding a new strategic layer.
Arena Fame levels and rewards
Fame is the brand-new progression system for Arena, divided into nine levels, each unlocking new perks. Players can earn more Fame for finishing higher in placements, completing champion-specific missions, surviving rounds, and more.
Here’s what you unlock at each level:
- Level 1: Overflow (Silver Augment)
- Level 2: Hattrick (Gold Augment)
- Level 3: Matchup Intro upgrade
- Level 4: Slow and Steady (Gold Augment)
- Level 5: One Reroll
- Level 6: Matchup Intro upgrade
- Level 7: And My Axe (Gold Augment)
- Level 8: Transmute Chaos (Prismatic Augment)
- Level 9: Matchup Intro upgrade
Could Arena make it into LoL esports?
LoL Arena offers a fast-paced blend of teamfights and on-the-fly build adaptation, testing each player’s critical thinking skills as they try to make the best out of what they’ve got. Unlike Summoner’s Rift, Arena encourages synergy, flexible counter-play, and fast decision-making, with no farming or macro to think about. This makes it a dream to watch from a spectator POV.
However, Arena’s biggest hurdle is balance. Augments and Anvils add too much RNG for Arena to be fully competitive yet. Pro players (and fans) want more skill expression, not random coinflips.
That being said, Teamfight Tactics, Riot’s League-inspired autobattler, thrives on randomness too, with random item drops and unit cards in the Shop, and has carved out a name for itself in esports, even featuring at this year’s Esports World Cup.
Either way, Riot Games clearly sees a future for Arena, with consistent patches and rewards. It may not be tournament-ready right now, but who knows? Maybe we’ll see Arena used for warm-ups on-stage to hype the crowd up at future tournaments before the main event.
LoL Arena tier list
Here’s our LoL Arena tier list as of patch 15.13, according to u.gg. We assume that new champion Yunara will be somewhere around A-tier once she’s released with patch 24.14.
S-Tier are champions that typically work well, no matter the scenario, whereas D-Tier are picks that lose more often than they win and are incredibly situational.
Please keep in mind that this Arena tier list is subject to change due to regular patches.

Take this LoL Arena tier list with a pinch of salt. Just because a champion is marked D-Tier doesn’t mean an automatic loss. It all depends on your skill level, Augments, item builds, and other in-game factors.
Tips for playing LoL Arena
- Choose strong champions: Not all LoL champions fit seamlessly into Arena – scaling champions are typically your best bet. Use champions in the S/A-Tiers in the tier list above, like Lux, Ambessa, Swain, Master Yi, etc.
- Save rerolls for Gold/Prismatic Augments: Basic stat buffs can feel underwhelming and useless as Arena games go on.
- Communicate with your duo: While you can queue up and enter games with randoms, it’s recommended to queue up with a friend so you can communicate on ultimate timings and coordination, especially with Guest of Honor effects in play.
- Adapt on the fly: Arena rewards situational items and flexibility more than rigid, pre-planned builds.
- Follow patch notes: Every new patch, Riot will be tweaking champions to be more balanced – keep an eye on balance updates to see who’s meta and who’s out.
Conclusion
Arena tests duo synergy to its absolute limits, offering PvP in its purest form, no macros to worry about. It’s one of the greatest additions to League of Legends for those who want a break from the constant grind or those looking to warm up before diving into ranked LoL games.
