Multinational technology company Sony has announced the acquisition of esports tournament platform Repeat.gg as part of its ongoing PlayStation-focused esports expansion.

Sony is looking to expand the breadth of its esports offerings as well as encourage gamers’ engagement with competitive play. Financial details were not disclosed.

Repeat.gg was founded in 2015 by a team of former professional gamers and esports business consultants and is headquartered in San Francisco. The company’s ‘all-in-one’ tournament platform offers automated esports campaigns and a dashboard that provides marketing analytics and performance, return on investment (ROI) calculations, and tools to reach its users.

Repeat’s technology also automatically manages tournaments, which includes the live tracking of rankings and the fulfilment of cash or other prize types.

Repeat says it has hosted over 75,000 tournaments with more than 4.35 million participants. Sony and PlayStation join a growing list of companies Repeat works with, including GameStop, Totino’s Pizza Rolls, Papa John’s, the US Army and gaming peripherals brand Turtle Beach.

Repeat maintained that its platform will continue to support PC, mobile and other consoles alongside PlayStation. Though through its partnership with Sony, the company claims it will have access to more resources, game titles and technology, allowing both companies to grow their esports capabilities.

Since last year, PlayStation has been growing its esports investments, most notably through the acquisition of North American fighting game tournament Evolution Championship Series (Evo). Earlier this year, Evo expanded its partnership with the company by teaming up with INZONE, Sony’s brand new gaming gear brand.

In a LinkedIn post, Aaron Fletcher, Founder and CEO of Repeat.gg, said: “Excited to announce that PlayStation is acquiring Repeat.gg. I have been in esports and gaming for over 20 years and am super excited to continue the journey [as] part of such an amazing company. Incredibly proud of what the team has been able to build and accomplish over the years, as they have stuck with me through the thick and thin.

“Also very appreciative of our investors who backed an Aussie gamer who had a vision to build a global scalable company within esports. Can’t wait to share what we have in store in the future for Repeat, expect some big announcements in the coming year!”
