Online fantasy esports platform World Champion Fantasy (WCF) has announced a partnership with content delivery service Edgio.

The deal will see the platform use Edgio’s Uplynk platform, enabling WCF to scale its operations using limited resources, according to a release.

Using Uplynk, the PlayerX platform will include live video synchronised with player data from esports tournaments. The data is automatically collected and uploaded into video form allowing players to search and share highlights as they happen during an event.

According to WCF, PlayerX aims to ‘shift the way users play’ fantasy sports thanks to a range of data providing insights into matches in realtime.

Additionally, a range of customisation options combined with access to statistics on a single platform aims to create a ‘non-gambling platform suitable for all ages’, the companies said.

For Edgio, the deal marks its first foray into the esports industry. The company has previously collaborated with the likes of fashion house Kate Spade and entertainment company Marvel.

2022 continues to be a year of expansion for WCF. In October, the platform named Kansas City Chiefs player JuJu Smith-Schuster as an investor and spokesperson for the platform and in November, it secured a deal with telecommunications company Verizon to incorporate infrastructure into PlayerX.

WCF will launch fantasy games for VALORANT and CS:GO in early 2023 and plans on incorporating League of Legends and Call of Duty later in the year.

Mike Vela, CEO of World Champion Fantasy, spoke on the partnership: “This is a big deal for the future of fantasy sports — and Edgio understood this vision. This partnership puts the fantasy sports user experience front and centre, utilizing data, engagement insights, and streaming capabilities to deliver dynamic and engaging fan experiences.”

“The fantasy experience is one-dimensional, with users simply interacting with text and numbers. By incorporating real-time stats and video into our PlayerX platform, users can flex and troll their opponents, search and watch the best clips and share highlights with their friends and followers.”
