UPDATE 27/8/25: Esports Insider has updated the article with a statement from TALON Esports regarding the organisation’s financial standing.

Sean Zhang, CEO of TALON Esports, has responded to claims surrounding the organisation failing to repay the interest on a $1m (~£742,668) loan.

The Southeast Asian esports organisation allegedly failed to pay $75,000 (~£55,706) within a two-week timeframe agreed upon the parties involved.

On August 25th, X user ‘hedgedhog7’ revealed TALON Esports had approached them to borrow $1m in June, stating that the loan would last ‘for 1-2 weeks.’ On August 22nd, the principal amount was repaid, while the interest remained outstanding.

The user also claimed that the organisation has ignored messages regarding repayments and has borrowed money from other people in order to repay the loan.

In response to the claims, Zhang took to social media to shed further light on the situation. “This was a simple matter of miscommunication with the accounts team on our end, they issued the $1m back and didn’t take into account the interest.”

“As CEO, I take full responsibility of the miscommunication and investigate internally where the issue happened and resolve it. It’s unfortunate a tweet was put out in such a malicious fashion when this could have been resolved in a much more civilised manner.”

In addition to Zhang’s response, the TALON Esports social media account has published a statement to provide transparency to its fans:

“All outstanding payments will be processed to all former players by September 6th, 2025, and current players by September 30th. We regret the delay and sincerely apologise to our players for any frustration caused.”

“To address the lapse in our financial operations, we are working closely with our legal and financial advisors to ensure this matter is addressed based on evidence and due process.”

Founded in 2017, TALON Esports currently fields nine rosters across various esports titles, including League of Legends, VALORANT, and Dota 2.

TALON Esports in 2025

In 2025, the organisation has continued to expand its partnership portfolio. In March, TALON Esports joined forces with gaming software and technology company ExitLag in a deal that saw the company support the organisation’s League of Legends, VALORANT, Dota 2, and Arena of Valor rosters.

TALON’s VALORANT roster remains in contention to qualify for Champions. On August 30th, the team faces off against Rex Regum Qeon in the lower bracket final. The top two teams from VCT Pacific will earn a place at VALORANT’s season-ending event starting on September 12th.
