Team Falcons has won the Esports World Cup Club Championship, defending its title won at the Esports World Cup in 2024.
The Saudi Arabian organisation secured victory after Team Liquid and Team Vitality dropped out of contention in the seventh and final week.
Out of the 40 organisations that form the Club Championship, Team Falcons fielded the most rosters across the 25 titles appearing at this year’s Esports World Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The organisation competed across 21 titles, scoring a trophy in Overwatch 2 and a second-place finish in Dota 2. As champion, it has walked away with a $7m (~£5.2m) prize after topping the standings with 4,900 points.
Team Falcons managed to fend off Team Liquid and Team Vitality, both of which managed to score over 4,000 points despite participating in fewer competitions.
Founded in 2017 by FIFA eWorld Cup champion Mossaad ‘Msdossary‘ Al-Dossary, Team Falcons has undergone a rapid rise to cement its place among the most notable esports organisations in the world.
In the past eight years, the organisation has won over $10m (~£7.4m) in prize money.
Team Falcons Controversy
Team Falcons is backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the same initiative that backs the Esports World Cup Foundation, the organisers of the Esports World Cup.
As a result, the organisation has the ability to secure top talent to represent it across various titles, putting it in the best position to take home the lion’s share of the $27m (~£20.1m) Club Championship prize pool up for grabs.
The Esports World Cup itself continues to face criticism from the community, as it is being considered an act of sportswashing aimed to improve the Kingdom’s imageunder the guise of improving sustainability within the esports industry.
Alongside allegations of sportswashing, Saudi Arabia’s human rights record also remains a centre point of criticism.
