Now, a couple of months into 2026, we’re at the start of Apex Legends Season 28, which celebrates the game’s seventh anniversary. As with any new season, Respawn has made several balance changes to its many legends, which will continue to shape and shift the meta into Spring 2026.
Fuse and Lifeline are the biggest benefactors in the latest patch notes, with Fuse profiting from a full rework. Octane is Apex Legends’ most popular legend, with a remarkable 16.9% pick rate, and these three, along with Alter, are the most dangerous options in the Apex Legends Season 28 meta.
Here are the best Apex Legends characters to dominate Season 28.
Apex Legends tier list explained
Our Apex Legends ranking is based on personal testing during preview periods and at release, as well as community testing and sentiment from casual and professional players.
As Apex Legends is a Battle Royale, our main parameter is not just win rate because ranks are determined considering the overall placement in a game, not just who wins and who loses. That’s why some characters are better to climb, thanks to their consistency, and some are better for pivotal promotion matches.
Apex Legends tier list criteria
To create this Apex Legends tier list, we’re using the tried-and-true SABC tier system, so defining an S-Tier character and what makes it so is essential.
- S-Tier: the best of the best. Mastering one of these characters is the greatest chance at victory a player can get, especially in a three-stack
- A-Tier: great pick. A mastered A-tier character will always be better than a first-time played S-Tier one, but one-on-one, S-Tiers will have an advantage.
- B-Tier: good only if you know what you’re doing. If your usual three-stack pick is in B-Tier this season, you can have decent success thanks to team coordination, but the chances, especially against a trio of S-Tiers, are slim.
- C-Tier: very situational. Usually, avoid them unless you’re passionate about them.
- D-Tier: should be avoided. Typically, they aren’t effective unless in very specific circumstances.
Best Apex Legends characters to play in 2026
S-Tier
Reworks and buffs have made an impact at the top of the Apex Legends character tier list. Both Fuse and Octane’s reworks have made them far more effective, especially Octane, who is at the top of the Apex Legends meta and the most popular Legend, according to Apex Legends Status. This makes Octane the best option at almost any elo level.
While Lifeline and Alter haven’t had buffs or reworks in Apex Legends Season 28, they are both reliable options and two of the best in their class. Lifeline is a top-tier healer who is great at helping a team outlast enemies in a long fight, while Alter’s extreme versatility and movement through portals mean she can attack from almost any angle.
| Character | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Octane | Skrimish | A rework has made him competitively dominant and the most popular Legend in Apex. |
| Fuse | Assault | Rework gives him a stronger ult, tactical, and pressure from cover. |
| Lifeline | Support | Top-tier healer and brilliant for longer fights. |
| Alter | Skirmisher | Extremely versatile and highly mobile, with a high skill ceiling. |
A-Tier
While they aren’t the best Legends in Apex, A-Tiers are meta picks and can be near the top of their class. Catalyst is our best Controller, with the recent buffs making it difficult to push against him. By contrast, someone like Horizon is great at breaking entrenched defences.
Revenant is incredible at duels, rewarding aggression, while Bangalore’s reliability and balance make her a great option in almost any situation. Bloodhound got a recent buff, which makes his recon far better than before the recent Apex Legends patch notes, and while Valkyrie isn’t S-Tier anymore, she is still more than viable with her vertical mobility. Newcastle is amazing at keeping teammates alive, and Conduit is an easy Support to pick up, with a great passive and tactical, meaning that she’s still effective out of view of allies.
| Character | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Revenant | Assault | Strong at duels and great for aggressive players |
| Bangalore | Assault | A reliable, balanced option for most situations. |
| Bloodhound | Recon | Scan got a massive buff, and his ultimate comes up quicker. |
| Conduit | Support | An easy hero, with a great passive and tactical. |
| Catalyst | Controller | Control buffs make building pushes difficult for foes. |
| Horizon | Skirmisher | Best at breaking entrenched defences. |
| Valkyrie | Recon | Strong jetpack movement and diving missiles. |
| Newcastle | Support | An amazing team Legend for keeping allies alive. |
B-Tier
B-Tiers are solid options that either don’t excel with any particular strengths or have distinct weaknesses that can get exposed during a fight. As a result, they tend to be more situational. Caustic is a great example, being strong in tight spaces, but given his big hitbox and how slow he is, open spaces are where he can often get exposed.
Mad Maggie has a similar weakness, being strong at close range and weak in open spaces. Loba is all about resource control, but when it comes to direct combat, she can be lacking compared to other Legends. This largely sums up a lot of the B-Tier Legends. Unlike higher-tier options, the strengths come with weaknesses that can put these Legends in unfavourable situations.
| Character | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pathfinder | Skirmisher | Big hitbox and lack of defence, but has great mobility. |
| Mad Maggie | Assault | Great in close-ranged fights, but weak in open spaces. |
| Wattson | Controller | High skill ceiling and Rampart does her job better. |
| Loba | Support | Brilliant resource control but lacking in direct combat. |
| Caustic | Controller | Great in tight spaces, but is big, slow, and easy to hit. |
| Rampart | Controller | Rework has made her offensive and defensive. |
| Mirage | Assault | Can be effective with clever decoys, but lacks team utility. |
| Sparrow | Recon | Great recon and stellar mobility, but doesn’t excel. |
| Wraith | Skirmisher | Teleporting is viable, but weaker than Alter’s. |
C-Tier
C-Tiers can have fun kits and will work in some situations, but many require a lot of things to go their way to compete, or require their players to be at a higher skill level than their opponents. While Ash is highly mobile with portals, she doesn’t match other portal users like Alter and Wraith when fights start becoming very quick, and angles change constantly.
Seer’s scan is fine, but there isn’t as much value out of the kit when compared to other Recon Legends, and while Vantage is strong at long range, being the game’s sniper, her weakness at close range prevents her from climbing any higher in the Apex Legends tier list.
| Character | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ash | Assault | Her kit can make it difficult to get wins when fights are fast, and angles change quickly. |
| Seer | Recon | Scan options don’t give as much value as other Recons. |
| Vantage | Recon | Strong at long range, terrible at close range. |
D-Tier
D-Tiers suffer from power creep, or their kits can make them a hindrance for their allies. Gibraltar and Ballistic are examples of the former, with Gibraltar having too large a hitbox and too slow to be viable in the current meta, especially as a Support. Ballistic’s base perks are just too weak.
Crypto’s kit makes him vulnerable for relatively long periods, as he has to be stationary when using his drones, and his EMPs can damage ally shields. This makes him vulnerable and a possible danger to his own allies.
| Character | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ballistic | Assault | Weak base perks. |
| Crypto | Recon | Dead time in his drones makes him vulnerable, and EMPs damage ally shields. |
| Gibraltar | Support | Large hitbox and plays too slowly for the current meta. |
How to choose the right Apex Legend for you
The first thing to consider when deciding which Legend to play is their role on the battlefield. There are five classes to choose from: Assault Legends focus on dps and mid combat support; Skirmisher Legends are for movement lovers and flankers; Recon Legends are expected to provide intel on enemy position and resources; Controller Legends manipulate the battlefield to their advantage and Support Legends heal, shield and take care of their teammates.
Inside each class there are different playstyles available so choose carefully among the available legends reading not only their abilities (passive, tactical and ultimate) but also their perks: during each game, you’ll be able to choose between various upgrades that change a Legend’s behaviour and tactics so hop into the firing range and get to testing. Also, don’t forget that aesthetics and personality also play a big part in having fun in a video game: if you’re vibing with a character but you don’t’ like their playstyle, try using them anyway in unranked games, they might grow on you!
Conclusion
If you’re looking for the best Apex Legends characters in Season 28, the answers are the likes of Alter, Lifeline, Fuse, and especially Octane. Octane’s extremely high pick rate and meta rating make him most likely the best character in the game, being the biggest benefactor of the mid-season patch for Season 27, and he has only continued to climb since.
While Season 28 hasn’t made the splash the other seasons have in the past, especially without a new Legend and relatively tame updates, the full rework of Fuse has only been a benefit. The effect this has had on the Apex Legends meta has been considerable, and it will be interesting to see how it affects the ALGS.
