Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has a new update after a year without any changes.
Ultimate received a small update Version 13.0.4 on June 24th, 2025. Mii Fighters are the focus of the very tiny patch, which doesn’t change all too much and leaves a lot of competitive concerns in the game.

- Fixed an issue in which thumbnail images displaying Mii Fighters would sometimes not be generated correctly when creating or modifying a Mii Fighter and saving it in Games & More

The following issues have been fixed in Nintendo Switch 2 system version 20.1.5, released on June 18, 2025:
- When a Nintendo Switch 2 player and a Nintendo Switch player were matched up in online play, the match may have ended immediately if someone was using a Mii Fighter
This is clearly not the most exciting patch, but the Smash community was not expecting much after Designer and Director behind the Smash series, Masahiro Sakurai, ‘retired’ years ago.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate esports pros often push the boundaries of the ‘family game,’ finding new ways to dominate with the wide range of characters on the massive roster. While this has made the scene exciting — thanks to a wide range of fighters in the Top 8 at Majors — it’s also revealed some mechanics that left characters feeling ‘broken.’
One popular example is Steve. A lot of Smash tournaments have even banned the Minecraft character after it was discovered he had moves that could barely be contended with, like his ultra-fast up air while in motion, an extended up tilt combo and the extreme versatility of his blocks. Despite Steve consistently dominating tournaments and upsetting Smash players, Smash developers have never made significant changes to the character.
With the possibility of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate being released on Nintendo Switch 2 — or even a new Smash title coming — it’s possible that bigger changes could be made to help balance the roster a bit more. While developers have never confirmed any news of a future Smash for Nintendo Switch 2, Sakurai has hinted at something to come.
In the past, Sakurai has said: “I can’t say with certainty that this would be the end of Smash.”
