Multinational esports organisation Team Liquid has teamed up with tournament platform Community Gaming to launch a tournament series for the Onchain Summer 2024 event.

The series will be divided into two Teamfight Tactics and two Hearthstone competitions, each with a prize pool of USDC $5,000 (~£3954). USDC is a digital asset redeemable 1:1 to US Dollars on Base, a Layer-2 blockchain incubated by Coinbase.

The Teamfight Tactics tournaments will take place on June 29th-30th and July 13th-14th, both featuring a 256-player battle royale format. Afterwards, 128 Hearthstone players will compete in single-elimination brackets on July 27th-28 and August 17th-18th.

The newly-announced series will be part of the Onchain Summer event, an annual initiative organised by cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase. Combining art, music, gaming and blockchain technology, this year’s iteration aims to promote immediate and secure payments for esports players payouts.

Shelley Taniguchi, Team Liquid Director, Global Partnerships, commented on Onchain’s payout system: All top 16 players will be paid instantly, with no fees after the tournament concludes. Players’ winnings will go into their Coinbase Smart Wallet, where they can access and use them immediately. Building with Coinbase onchain products is a value to the gaming community.”

Esports tournament platform Community Gaming provides players, tournament organisers and game developers with the tools to run competitions for web2 and web3 games. The company has previously worked with Riot Games, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) developer Moonton and Peruvian esports organisation INFAMOUS GAMING.

Founded in 2000, global esports organisation Team Liquid competes in various titles, such as  League of Legends, VALORANT, Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2. Coinbase has been a partner of Team Liquid since 2021, collaborating on several projects and introducing a crypto-based payment feature to the organisation’s official store.

This year, Team Liquid elevated its portfolio of rosters through expansions into MLBB and EA Sports FC. The organisation also partnered with manga publisher Viz Media to create a merchandise collection themed around the anime series Death Note.
