Often labelled the underbelly of esports revenue figures, betting on esports and revenues derived from that activity have been a present and observable phenomenon since the establishment of the industry. Over the years of industry growth, there has been an ongoing debate as to the place of betting on esports within the wider industry. Stakeholders have held differing views on the topic open acceptance to hostile refusal. So the question that remains is, can esports and betting on esports coexist?

Bird & Bird is a leading international law firm headquartered in London. With such a rich heritage in technology, IP, sport and video games, as well as broad international reach through our 29 offices and wider international network, the firm is ideally placed to advise on the full range of issues affecting the esports industry.
We have advised stakeholders from various parts of the esports ecosystem, from publishers and platform operators through to teams and agencies, on regulatory issues such as league structuring, anti-cheating, anti-doping and safeguarding, as well as commercial deals in the form of (for example) franchise, sponsorship, licensing and players contracts. This is on top of the broader assistance that comes with a full service firm, such as managing IP portfolios, fundraising and data protection.
Esports not only combines a lot of the firm’s strengths, but also its passions, which means that our lawyers are keen to contribute to the debate. We’ve written widely on esports across a range of media, including for industry publications and on our dedicated sport and media law blog (MediaWrites.law), while two of our associates are currently working on an esports chapter for a leading sports law practitioner text. We’re also actively involved with the Esports Integrity Coalition, and one of our team is a disciplinary panel member for this fast-growing body.
