Sean Smith, former Head of Strategy and Business Operations for Activision Blizzard Esports, has been promoted to CEO of mobile-focused esports organisation Tribe Gaming.

The decision was made last month and sees the organisation’s founder, Patrick Carney, take on a new role as Chief Strategy Officer.

Smith joined Tribe Gaming in 2023 as Chief Operating Officer (COO). The new CEO has a strong business leadership background, having worked for NBA teams, Washington Wizards and Orlando Magic, before staying at Activision Blizzard’s esports division for more than four years.

Smith told Esports Insider: “I am both humbled and honoured to have been entrusted with the role of CEO, leading this incredible team on our exciting journey forward. Thank you to Pat, our staff, and our investors for believing in me.

“Our success would not be possible without the support of our tremendous partners who believe in what we uniquely offer, and for that, I am immensely grateful.”

Founded in 2017 by Patrick Carney, otherwise known as ‘Chief Pat’, and Jon Sakoucky, Tribe Gaming is a North American esports organisation that focuses on mobile esports titles such as Brawl Stars, Call of Duty: Mobile, Clash Royale and Clash of Clans.

Tribe Gaming has secured partnerships with Samsung Electronics America and telecommunications company AT&T. Earlier this year, Tribe and AT&T converted an RV into a mobile gaming hub, the Tribe Mobile Club House, for the organisation’s content creators and fans.

Since Tribe Gaming’s foundation, Carney had taken the role of CEO. However, the founder has now stepped into the position of Chief Strategy Officer, leading specific strategic initiatives and business units as well as investor relations at Tribe. Carney will remain on the leadership team and Board of Directors.

Carney commented on handing Smith the role of CEO: “Since joining Tribe late last year, Sean has proven to be an incredible leader and steward of the business.

“I’m thrilled to pass the CEO baton to him as the company operates at its highest level ever, and I’m fired up to continue working with our team to shape greatness within mobile gaming.”
